Simple and Delicious Tuna and Tofu Stew
A perfect side dish to enjoy with rice!
Main Ingredients
- 1 block of tofu (approx. 300g)
- 1/2 medium onion
- 1 can of tuna (150g, drained)
- 1 handful of green onions (chopped)
Seasoning
- 3 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- A pinch of black pepper
- 3 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- A pinch of black pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, cut the tofu into approximately 1.5cm thick slices. Slicing them too thinly might cause them to break apart during cooking, so a moderate thickness is best. Thinly slice the half onion as well. Place the sliced tofu and onion into a pot, arranging them nicely.
Step 2
Drain the oil from the canned tuna. In a separate bowl, combine the drained tuna, 3 tablespoons of red pepper flakes, 3 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 tablespoon of minced garlic, and a pinch of black pepper. Mix these ingredients well with your hands or a spoon to create a flavorful seasoning paste. Marinating the tuna in the seasonings beforehand will infuse it with more flavor. Add this seasoned tuna to the pot with the tofu and onions. Pour in 300-350ml of water or broth. You can adjust the amount of liquid to your preference.
Step 3
Place the pot over medium heat and bring it to a boil. Once the stew is bubbling, reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes. This simmering time allows the tofu to absorb the flavors and the broth to deepen. Finally, add a generous handful of chopped green onions and cook for another 1-2 minutes. The fresh flavor of the green onions will meld beautifully with the stew. Be careful not to overcook the green onions, as they can become too soft; just until they are slightly wilted is perfect. (If you prefer a spicier stew, you can add the Cheongyang chili pepper and red chili pepper at this stage.)
