Eating out for king crab can easily cost hundreds of thousands of won, but while researching king crab prices, I discovered that I could buy fresh red king crab online from a specialized seafood vendor. I immediately placed an order for the weekend! They process the live king crab, which has the best yield, by quickly steaming and then flash-freezing it, making it much more affordable than the market price. I found that the king crab prices were actually better than those for live snow crabs, so I decided to go all out and ordered the largest one available, a 2.5kg beauty!

Step 1

First, let the frozen king crab thaw naturally at room temperature. Once fully thawed, place the king crab in a steamer basket. Steam over medium heat for approximately 20 minutes. Ensure the lid is tightly closed to prevent steam from escaping. After steaming, don’t cut it immediately. Let it rest and steam in its own residual heat for about 5 minutes. This resting period helps to keep the crab meat incredibly moist and tender. While you can blanch it in boiling water for 5 minutes, I prefer steaming it for longer and allowing it to rest, as I worry about losing the delicious crab juices if blanched. This method ensures a richer flavor.

You’ll notice that one of the king crab’s claws is significantly larger than the other. It’s exciting to think about how much sweet, succulent meat is packed inside that massive claw!

This king crab was packed with meat, making every bite a delightful experience. As I peeled away the shell, the pristine white meat revealed itself, a testament to its freshness.

Here’s a secret weapon for enjoying king crab: fried rice made in its shell! You can easily create a luxurious king crab fried rice right at home. Scoop out a generous spoonful of the crab meat from the shell. In a pot, lightly heat some sesame oil, then add the crab meat and stir-fry. Incorporate a small amount of finely chopped kimchi and continue stir-frying. Add a bowl of warm cooked rice and mix everything together. Finally, sprinkle generously with seaweed flakes to finish. The result is a rich, flavorful king crab fried rice. Being able to enjoy delicious fried rice using the leftover shell after savoring the crab meat makes for a truly perfect meal.
