A perfect one-dish meal for a satisfying solo meal! Introducing Jjajang Jjolmyeon, a delightful stir-fry combining the chewy texture of jjolmyeon noodles with the rich flavor of jjajang powder. Instead of typical gochujang or tteokbokki sauce, this recipe uses a super simple jjajang powder base. We’ve skipped the rice cakes and added chewy potato dumplings for a unique twist. A touch of spicy Buldak sauce is added to balance the mild sweetness of the jjajang, and caramel sauce is used instead of sugar to recreate the authentic taste of jjajangmyeon from Chinese restaurants. Enjoy this simple yet delicious Jjajang Jjolmyeon at home!
Ingredients
- Jjolmyeon noodles, 100g
- Caramel sauce, 1 Tbsp
- Buldak sauce, 1 tsp
- Potato dumplings, 5 pieces
- Jjajang powder, 3 Tbsp
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the jjolmyeon noodles. If the noodles are clumped together, gently rub them with your palms, starting from the bottom strands, to separate them. Once loosened, gently rub the top part as well to fully separate the noodles.
Step 2
Add enough water to the pot to just cover the noodles, similar to cooking Jjapaghetti, and bring it to a rolling boil. Once boiling, add the separated jjolmyeon noodles and the potato dumplings, and cook them together. Jjolmyeon cooks faster than ramen, so if the water seems too much, you can scoop out about a ladleful.
Step 3
While the noodles and dumplings are cooking, add the jjajang powder (3 Tbsp), Buldak sauce (1 tsp), and caramel sauce (1 Tbsp) to the boiling water. Once everything is cooked, immediately turn off the heat and quickly stir to combine the sauce evenly, ensuring no clumps form.
Step 4
Transfer the finished Jjajang Jjolmyeon to a serving bowl. While I plated it nicely for the photoshoot, it’s perfectly fine to enjoy it straight from the pot for ultimate convenience.
Step 5
Prepare a fried egg in advance. You can cook it to your preference, whether sunny-side up or fully cooked.
Step 6
Top the Jjajang Jjolmyeon with the golden fried egg. Sprinkle with chopped green onions and toasted sesame seeds for a complete and visually appealing dish. This dish is incredibly simple, taking about 7 minutes in total, including frying the egg. The subtle sweetness and a hint of spiciness are just perfect. If you desire more heat, feel free to add more Buldak sauce, or some chili powder or chopped Cheongyang peppers. The caramel sauce really adds a unique depth of flavor! Highly recommended.
