Tteokbokki Ingredients
  • 300g Tteokbokki rice cakes (choose between plain or chewy rice cakes)
  • 2 sheets of fish cakes (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1/4 onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 handful of green onions (cut into large pieces)

Golden Ratio Seasoning
  • 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean red chili paste, heaped)
  • 2.5 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1.5 Tbsp Red Chili Flakes (adjust for desired spiciness)
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 3 Tbsp Sugar (the secret to its delightful sweetness!)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

In a wide pan or pot, combine 2 cups (approx. 400ml) of water, 300g of tteokbokki rice cakes, and 3 Tbsp of sugar. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. The sugar will gently infuse the rice cakes with sweetness, setting the stage for deliciousness.

Step 2

Once the water begins to boil, stir in 1 Tbsp of gochujang until it dissolves. It’s crucial to stir frequently to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom of the pan and to ensure the sauce is well-mixed. Stir gently and patiently!

Step 3

After the gochujang has fully dissolved and the sauce has a smooth, rich color, add 2.5 Tbsp of soy sauce and mix thoroughly. The umami from the soy sauce will add depth to the tteokbokki’s flavor.

Step 4

Now, it’s time to add the spice! Stir in 1.5 Tbsp of red chili flakes. For a spicier kick, I like to mix 1 Tbsp of regular chili flakes with 0.5 Tbsp of extra spicy chili flakes, but feel free to adjust to your preference!

Step 5

Finally, add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic to enhance the aroma and flavor. The pungent notes of garlic will make the tteokbokki taste even more vibrant.

Step 6

Add the 2 sheets of fish cakes, cut into your desired pieces. The fish cakes will absorb the savory sauce beautifully.

Step 7

From this point, feel free to add any other ingredients you desire! I added perilla leaves, sliced onion, large chunks of green onion, and mini sausages. Let everything simmer and bubble together until well combined.

Step 8

Once the sauce has thickened to your liking and the ingredients are coated in the delicious sauce, your Tteokbokki is ready! Enjoy the wonderfully sweet and savory taste. It’s best served immediately while warm.
