Here’s a fantastic one-bowl meal perfect for camping trips, dorm room cooking, solo diners, or anyone who simply loves Spam! This dish offers a delightful sweet and savory flavor profile that’s incredibly satisfying.
Main Ingredients
- Spam: 200g (standard can)
- Green onion: 1 Tbsp (chopped)
- Egg yolk: 1
- Sesame seeds: A pinch
- Garlic: 5 cloves
- Cooked rice: 1 bowl
Spam Glaze Ingredients
- Water: 100ml
- Soy sauce: 1 Tbsp
- Sugar: 2 Tbsp
- Water: 100ml
- Soy sauce: 1 Tbsp
- Sugar: 2 Tbsp
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, thinly slice the 5 cloves of garlic into ‘pyeon’ (flat slices). Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Fry the garlic slices slowly until they turn golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning, and flip them occasionally. Once done, remove the fried garlic and drain on paper towels.
Step 2
Cut the 200g can of Spam into your desired bite-sized pieces, about 1cm thick. Lightly oil a heated pan, or use the Spam’s own fat to pan-fry it until golden brown on both sides. Frying it well enhances the flavor and texture.
Step 3
Now, let’s prepare the delicious Spam glaze. Pour 100ml of water into a small pot or pan.
Step 4
Next, add 1 Tbsp of soy sauce. This will add a deep, savory flavor to the glaze.
Step 5
Finally, add 2 Tbsp of sugar to sweeten the glaze. Feel free to adjust the sugar amount to your preference.
Step 6
Heat the mixture over medium heat until it comes to a gentle boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat slightly.
Step 7
Add all the pre-fried Spam pieces to the simmering glaze. Let them simmer over medium-low heat until the Spam absorbs the sauce and becomes glossy. This step is crucial for flavor!
Step 8
Place 1 bowl of warm cooked rice into your serving bowl. Sprinkle the crispy fried garlic slices over the rice for a delightful crunch and aroma.
Step 9
Arrange the glazed Spam around the sides of the rice in an appealing manner. You can also pile it on top, or place it neatly beside the rice.
Step 10
To finish, carefully place the fresh egg yolk in the center. Garnish with the chopped green onion and a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds. (Oops, I might have added a bit too much sesame seed!^^)
Step 11
Your mouthwatering, sweet and savory ‘Spam Donburi’ is ready! Mix it all up for an even more delicious experience. Enjoy your meal today!
