Spicy & Sweet Steamed Green Pepper Salad
[5-Minute Recipe] Steamed Young Peppers / Green Peppers Salad: It doesn’t have to be Ggwari peppers!
Even though it involves steaming, this pepper salad is incredibly easy for anyone to make! Due to the nature of peppers, they don’t become too mushy even after steaming, making it a highly recommended side dish. *Measurements are based on a standard adult Korean dining spoon.
Main Ingredients
- 2 heaping handfuls of green peppers / young peppers (approx. 200-250g)
- 1 heaping tablespoon of flour (approx. 2 Tbsp)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare about two generous handfuls of green or young peppers. Using non-spicy varieties, like those similar to Ggwari peppers, will yield a more enjoyable flavor. Carefully remove the stems from the peppers and wash them thoroughly under running water. It’s best to proceed to the next step while they still have a little moisture on them.
Step 2
While the peppers are still slightly wet from washing, add 1 heaping tablespoon of flour. Gently toss the peppers to coat them evenly with the flour. It’s important to achieve a thin coating of flour on the surface of the peppers. This will help prevent excessive moisture loss during steaming and allow the seasoning to adhere better.
Step 3
Now, let’s start the steaming process. Fill a pot with water and bring it to a boil. Place a steamer basket over the boiling water. Arrange the floured peppers evenly in the steamer basket, cover with a lid, and steam for approximately 3 minutes. Avoid steaming for too long, as the peppers can become too soft. After 3 minutes, check that the peppers have slightly wilted.
Step 4
Carefully remove the steamed peppers and place them in a bowl. Add all the prepared seasoning ingredients (2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, 1 Tbsp jolcheong or oligo당, 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic). Gently mix and toss the peppers with the seasonings using your hands until well coated. Be careful not to mash the peppers while mixing.
Step 5
Finally, if you have toasted sesame seeds, lightly crush them between your palms to release their nutty aroma and sprinkle them over the salad. And there you have it – a delicious spicy and sweet steamed green pepper salad! It’s wonderfully flavorful served over a bowl of warm rice. This is a simple yet delightful side dish perfect for the whole family to enjoy.
