Main Ingredients
  • 20 Vienna sausages
  • 1/2 red bell pepper
  • 1/2 yellow bell pepper
  • 7 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 stalk green onion
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil
  • A pinch of sesame seeds

Sausage and Vegetable Stir-fry Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce (or oyster sauce)
  • 1 Tbsp oligosaccharide (or allulose)
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic (if not using whole garlic)
  • 2 Tbsp ketchup

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare all your vegetables. Thinly slice the whole garlic cloves. Dice the onion and bell peppers into bite-sized pieces, similar in size to the sausages. Slice the green onion diagonally. Cutting everything to a similar size ensures even cooking and prevents burning.

Step 2

Score the Vienna sausages decoratively. Making cuts prevents them from bursting while cooking and allows the sauce to penetrate better, enhancing the flavor. In addition to basic diagonal cuts, you can add more cuts in the opposite direction for a more intricate design.

Step 3

If you want to create a ‘octopus’ shape, make long cuts about halfway down the sausage from the tip, and then make crosswise cuts. This will result in cute octopus tentacles, which children will surely love!

Step 4

Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil, add the scored Vienna sausages, and blanch them briefly. Then, rinse them under cold water. This step helps to remove excess oil, leading to a cleaner and more savory taste.

Step 5

Now, let’s make the delicious sauce for the stir-fry. In a bowl, combine 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp ketchup, 1 Tbsp oligosaccharide (or allulose), and 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce. You can substitute oyster sauce for Worcestershire sauce for an extra boost of umami. If you’re not using whole garlic, add 1 Tbsp minced garlic at this stage.

Step 6

Heat 2 Tbsp of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the sliced garlic and gently sauté until fragrant, creating garlic-infused oil. Once you can smell the aromatic garlic, get ready to add the next ingredients.

Step 7

Once the garlic oil is ready, add the onion, bell peppers, and the blanched Vienna sausages to the pan. Reserve the green onion for later. Stir-fry over medium-high heat to maintain the crispness of the vegetables.

Step 8

As the sausages cook and the scored parts begin to open up, pour the pre-made delicious sauce evenly over the ingredients. Ensure the sauce coats everything well.

Step 9

Reduce the heat to medium and stir-fry until the sauce thickens slightly and the vegetables are cooked to your desired tenderness. Be careful not to overcook, as the vegetables can become mushy.

Step 10

When the sauce has reduced and all the ingredients are cooked through, turn off the heat. Sprinkle with sesame seeds for an extra touch of nutty flavor. Your delicious Sausage and Vegetable Stir-fry (Ssoyabokkeum) is now complete! It’s a perfect side dish for kids and an excellent snack to enjoy with drinks.
