  • Square fish cakes 1kg (Cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • Scallions 4 stalks (Cut into large pieces)
  • Cabbage 1/2 head (Cut into large, bite-sized pieces)

Perfectly Balanced Seasoning
  • Gochujang (Korean chili paste) 500g (The key to tteokbokki flavor!)
  • Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) 400g (Adds spiciness and color)
  • Sugar 400g (Add a little more if you prefer it sweeter)
  • Oyster sauce 300g (The secret to enhancing umami)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the vegetables. Cut the scallions into large pieces, about 4-5cm long. Also, cut the square fish cakes and cabbage into similar bite-sized square pieces, about 4-5cm. Cutting them large like this gives a good chewy texture and allows the sauce to penetrate well.

Step 2

The seasoning is half the battle for delicious tteokbokki! In a bowl, combine 500g of gochujang, 400g of gochugaru, 400g of sugar, and 300g of oyster sauce. Mix well until there are no lumps. Preparing the sauce in advance makes it easier to add when cooking the tteokbokki.

Step 3

Now, let’s cook the tteokbokki! Pour a generous amount of broth or water into a wide pot or Dutch oven. Add the cut fish cakes first and bring it to a boil over high heat. Boiling the fish cakes first will release their delicious flavor, making the broth richer.

Step 4

Once the water is boiling rapidly, add the prepared tteokbokki rice cakes and the pre-mixed seasoning sauce. It’s important to stir well with a spatula to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Mix thoroughly so the sauce evenly coats the rice cakes.

Step 5

After checking that the rice cakes are tender and cooked, add the cut scallions and cabbage. Adding the vegetables too early can make them mushy, so adding them when the rice cakes are almost done will help maintain their crispness. Let it simmer for a bit longer after adding the vegetables.

Step 6

Ta-da! Your delicious, old-fashioned style tteokbokki is ready, steaming hot! The sweet and spicy aroma is mouthwatering. It tastes best when enjoyed immediately while it’s hot. Enjoy your meal!
