Baek Jong-won’s Tteokbokki Golden Recipe: How to Make Delicious Soupy Tteokbokki Like a Street Food Stall

Taste the tteokbokki you’ve always loved from street food stalls! With Baek Jong-won’s secret recipe, you can easily make delicious soupy tteokbokki at home. The key is the sauce, made with a perfect balance of soy sauce, gochugaru (red pepper powder), gochujang (red pepper paste), and sugar. If the sauce becomes too thick as it cooks, you can add a little water to achieve your desired soupy consistency. While we’re using rice cakes (tteok), feel free to use chewy chewy rice cakes (tteok) if that’s your preference! Let’s get started on this simple yet deeply flavorful soupy tteokbokki.

Ingredients
  • Tteokbokki rice cakes 200g (use plain or chewy rice cakes)
  • 1 stalk of green onion
  • 2 sheets of fish cake
  • 6 small sausages

Golden Sauce
  • 3 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean red pepper powder)
  • 1.5 Tbsp Sugar
  • 1.5 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean red pepper paste)
  • 1.5 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 600ml Water (approx. 3 cups)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare 200g of tteokbokki rice cakes. If they are stuck together, gently rinse them under running water and separate them. Drain well and set aside. (If the rice cakes are hard, soaking them in cold water for a bit will make them softer.)

Step 2

Slice 1 stalk of green onion diagonally. Generous amounts of green onion add a refreshing and deep flavor to tteokbokki.

Step 3

Cut 2 sheets of fish cake into bite-sized pieces or your desired shapes. Triangles or squares work well.

Step 4

Make a few shallow cuts on the 6 small sausages. This helps the sauce penetrate better and makes them look more appealing.

Step 5

Now, let’s make the delicious sauce. In a pot, combine 3 Tbsp gochugaru, 1.5 Tbsp sugar, 1.5 Tbsp gochujang, and 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce. Pour in 600ml of water and mix well.

Step 6

Place the pot over medium heat and stir until the sauce ingredients are well combined. Once the sugar has dissolved and the sauce is bubbling gently, add the prepared tteokbokki rice cakes.

Step 7

After adding the rice cakes, let them cook for about 5 minutes until they become soft and chewy. The sauce will start to thicken slightly as the rice cakes absorb the liquid.

Step 8

Once the rice cakes are partially cooked, add the sliced fish cakes and green onions. Stir everything together and let it simmer for another 5-10 minutes. This allows the flavors from the fish cakes and green onions to infuse into the sauce.

Step 9

Reduce the heat to low and continue to simmer until the tteokbokki sauce reaches your desired consistency. It’s important to stir occasionally to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot. If the sauce gets too thick, you can add a little more water to adjust it. Once your delicious soupy tteokbokki is ready, turn off the heat and enjoy!
