Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, trim off the crusts from all 9 slices of bread. This will make them look neater and result in a softer texture when eaten.

Step 2

Using a rolling pin or the bottom of a glass, flatten each of the crustless bread slices as thinly as possible. The thinner you roll them, the crispier and tastier your French toast pies will be.

Step 3

Cut each flattened bread slice in half, creating 18 half-moon shapes. For 6 of these half-moon pieces, which will form the top layer, use a cookie cutter or a bottle cap to cut out a circular hole in the center. This opening will allow the sweet jam to peek through enticingly.

Step 4

Alternatively, for a more traditional French toast pie shape, you can fold one of the half-moon bread pieces in half before cutting. Then, use scissors or a knife to create a larger, square-shaped opening. This method allows for a more generous filling to be visible.

Step 5

Now it’s time to assemble the pies. You’ll use 3 half-moon bread slices (6 pieces total) for each pie. Spread your chosen jam, like strawberry or apricot, thinly and evenly onto the two bottom slices using a spoon. Adjust the amount of jam according to your preference.

Step 6

Stack the two jam-covered bread slices together. Place the bread with the pre-cut hole on top. Then, spread a little more jam onto the surface of this top slice, ensuring it fills the hole. This will create a delightful jammy effect when baked.

Step 7

Melt a small amount of butter in a bowl, either in the microwave or over low heat. Brush a thin layer of this melted butter onto the top surface of each assembled pie. This butter coating will help the bread become extra golden and crispy. Finally, sprinkle a little sugar over the top for added sweetness and a delightful crunch.

Step 8

Carefully place the French toast pies into an air fryer that has been preheated to 180°C (350°F). Air fry for about 7-8 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and crisp. Cooking time may vary slightly depending on your air fryer model, so keep an eye on them and adjust as needed. They are best enjoyed warm right after baking!
