Main Ingredients
  • 500g salted seaweed stems
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1/3 carrot

Seasoning
  • 2-3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • A tiny pinch of black pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the salted seaweed stems. Rinse them under cold running water to remove excess salt. Then, gently rub the stems with your hands and rinse them 2-3 times thoroughly. This helps remove any remaining saltiness.

Step 2

Soak the rinsed seaweed stems in cold water for about 10-20 minutes. This process allows the saltiness to leach out gradually. I personally prefer a slightly salty taste, so I didn’t remove all the salt. If you prefer a milder flavor, you can soak them for a longer period.

Step 3

Once soaked, squeeze out as much water as possible from the seaweed stems using your hands. Then, cut them into bite-sized pieces, about 5-7 cm long.

Step 4

Thinly slice the onion and julienne the carrot. Cutting the vegetables into uniform sizes ensures they cook evenly and makes the dish look more appealing.

Step 5

Heat a pan over medium heat and add the cut seaweed stems. Drizzle in 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil. Add a tiny pinch of black pepper and stir-fry for about 2 minutes until the stems are tender. (Tip: If you dislike the flavor of black pepper, feel free to omit it. I add a little to help neutralize any potential fishy smell from the seaweed.)

Step 6

Now, add the sliced onion and julienned carrot to the pan. Sprinkle in one pinch of salt and stir-fry until the onions become translucent and slightly softened. Be careful not to overcook them, as this can make the vegetables mushy.

Step 7

Finally, drizzle in 1 teaspoon of sesame oil and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds. Stir well to combine. Your delicious stir-fried seaweed stems are ready to be enjoyed! Serve them over warm rice for a delightful meal.
