Delicious Soy Braised Potatoes: A Golden Recipe
Super Simple & Delicious Soy Braised Potatoes Recipe
Here’s a simple recipe for homemade soy braised potatoes. This savory and slightly sweet dish is the perfect side for any meal!
Ingredients
- 2 potatoes (approx. 188g after peeling)
- 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1.5 Tbsp chopped green onion
- 1.8 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1.8 Tbsp corn syrup (or oligosaccharide)
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 60ml water
- Sesame seeds for garnish
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, peel the potatoes thoroughly and rinse them under running water until clean.
Step 2
Cut the cleaned potatoes into bite-sized cubes, about 0.7 to 1 cm thick. Avoid cutting them too thin, as they might break apart during cooking.
Step 3
To remove excess starch, which helps the potatoes absorb flavor better and prevents them from falling apart, place the cut potatoes in a bowl of cold water. Gently swish them with your hands and change the water about 3 times.
Step 4
Drain the washed potatoes thoroughly in a colander. Any remaining water can cause splattering when frying or prevent the sauce from penetrating evenly.
Step 5
Finely chop the green onion and have 0.5 Tbsp of minced garlic ready.
Step 6
Now, let’s start cooking! Add the drained potatoes to a pot and pour in 2 Tbsp of olive oil.
Step 7
Place the pot over medium heat on the stovetop and sauté the potatoes for about 1 minute until they start to turn slightly golden. This step enhances the potato’s flavor.
Step 8
Once the potatoes are lightly sautéed, add 1.8 Tbsp of soy sauce.
Step 9
Next, add 1.8 Tbsp of corn syrup (or oligosaccharide) for a touch of sweetness.
Step 10
Using a spatula or spoon, gently stir the potatoes and seasonings, coating them evenly with the soy sauce and syrup. Be careful not to mash the potatoes.
Step 11
Add the prepared minced garlic and chopped green onions. Pour in 60ml of water. Stir gently to combine everything, then increase the heat to high and bring it to a boil.
Step 12
As soon as the liquid starts to bubble, cover the pot with a lid. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the potatoes simmer for about 4 minutes, allowing them to cook through and absorb the sauce. (Cooking time may vary depending on the size of the potato pieces, so check periodically to ensure they are cooked to your liking.)
Step 13
After simmering, uncover the pot and stir-fry the potatoes over medium heat to evaporate any remaining moisture. To check if the potatoes are fully cooked, pierce them with a chopstick or skewer. They should go in smoothly if done.
Step 14
Taste the potatoes and adjust the seasoning if needed. Add a little more soy sauce if it’s not salty enough, or a bit more corn syrup for extra sweetness, to suit your preference. Find your perfect balance of savory and sweet!
Step 15
Finally, sprinkle some sesame seeds over the finished dish for a nutty aroma. Your delicious soy braised potatoes are ready to be enjoyed with a warm bowl of rice!
