Main Ingredients
- 1 bowl of warm cooked rice
- 1 tablespoon of shredded or stir-fried soy-braised beef (Jorim)
Seasoning & Sauce
- 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1.5 Tbsp corn syrup or rice syrup
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp salt (for seasoning rice)
- 1 Tbsp cooking wine (Mirin)
- Nori seaweed strips (optional, to taste)
- 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1.5 Tbsp corn syrup or rice syrup
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp salt (for seasoning rice)
- 1 Tbsp cooking wine (Mirin)
- Nori seaweed strips (optional, to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a bowl of warm cooked rice, gently mix in 1 tsp of salt and 1 Tbsp of sesame oil. Mix carefully to avoid mashing the rice grains, ensuring the rice is seasoned and cohesive.
Step 2
Create a small indentation in the center of the seasoned rice and generously spoon in 1 tablespoon of the shredded soy-braised beef (Jorim). You can also use finely chopped stir-fried anchovies or other favorite side dishes.
Step 3
Carefully cover the filling with the remaining rice. Gently press the rice together with your hands to form a firm shape, ensuring it holds together well. You can shape them into round patties or triangles, as you prefer.
Step 4
In a small bowl, whisk together 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp corn syrup, and 1 Tbsp cooking wine to create a glaze. This sauce will add a beautiful sheen and savory flavor to the onigiri.
Step 5
Lightly grease a heated pan with a bit of cooking oil. Then, use a paper towel to spread the oil thinly across the entire surface of the pan. This creates a non-stick coating without excess oil, allowing the onigiri to grill to a nice golden brown.
Step 6
Lightly brush or dip the top surface of the shaped onigiri into the prepared soy glaze. Apply a thin layer to prevent the sauce from burning.
Step 7
Place the onigiri onto the pan over medium-low heat. Grill until golden brown on one side, then flip. Brush the other side with the glaze and continue grilling until evenly browned and slightly crispy. Be mindful of the heat to avoid burning.
Step 8
Arrange the beautifully grilled onigiri on a plate.
Step 9
For an extra touch, wrap a strip of nori seaweed around the sides of the grilled onigiri. Your delicious, freshly grilled onigiri are now ready to be enjoyed! Best served warm.
