Crispy & Sweet No-Oven White Bread Apple Pie
Easy No-Oven Apple Pie Using White Bread and Apples from Your Fridge
Got leftover white bread? Don’t throw it away! Make this incredibly simple white bread apple pie with a crispy exterior and a sweet, gooey apple filling, all without an oven. The fragrant cinnamon will tantalize your taste buds, making it a perfect treat.
Ingredients
- 4 slices white bread
- 1/2 apple
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp honey
- Pinch of cinnamon powder
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash the half apple thoroughly, peel it, and dice it into small, approximately 1cm cubes. Don’t forget to remove the core and seeds.
Step 2
Heat a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Add 2 tablespoons of sugar and stir continuously as it melts and caramelizes. Be careful not to burn it.
Step 3
Once the sugar has melted and turned a light golden brown, add the diced apples to the pan. Stir them together and cook until the apples start to soften and become slightly translucent. Then, sprinkle in the cinnamon powder. If you love cinnamon, feel free to add a little more, but it’s best to taste as you go to adjust to your preference.
Step 4
After the apples and cinnamon are well combined, add 1 tablespoon of honey and stir until the mixture becomes glossy and well-coated. Once everything is nicely mixed, turn off the heat. Transfer the cooked apple filling to a bowl to cool slightly.
Step 5
Trim the crusts off the 4 slices of white bread using a knife. Then, using a rolling pin, the bottom of a sturdy glass, or even a bottle, flatten each slice of bread until it’s nice and thin. If you prefer a round shape, you can use a cookie cutter or a cup to shape them. (There are 5 slices in the photo; one was already enjoyed! 😉)
Step 6
Place a generous spoonful of the prepared sweet apple filling onto the center of each flattened bread slice. Be careful not to overfill, as this can cause the pie to burst during cooking. Leave a small border around the edges.
Step 7
Fold the bread in half or top with another flattened slice, then use a fork to press down firmly along the edges, sealing the pie. You can trim any excess bread from the edges with a knife for a neater finish. If the edges aren’t sticking well, you can mix one egg with a little water and brush it along the edges of the bread before sealing to help it stick securely.
Step 8
Your white bread apple pies are now ready to be cooked! You can bake them in an oven or cook them in a skillet on the stovetop. Both methods yield delicious results.
Step 9
If using a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in the pan over low heat. Place the prepared pies in the pan and cook, flipping them occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy on both sides.
Step 10
For an even crispier and more golden finish, you can brush the front and back of the bread with a little leftover egg wash (or the egg and water mixture) before cooking. This will give them a beautiful, appetizing golden-brown color. Once they’re nicely browned, your delicious white bread apple pies are complete!
Step 11
Enjoy your white bread apple pies warm! They make a fantastic snack for kids and a delightful dessert for afternoon tea. Simple to make, yet wonderfully satisfying.
