- 2 Tbsp maesilcheong (plum extract/syrup) (30ml)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil (15ml)
- A pinch of toasted sesame seeds
- 2 Tbsp cooking oil (30ml)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the main ingredient: fish cakes. Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces (about 1cm wide rectangles or your preferred shape). Slice the onion thinly into strips and diagonally slice the green onion for a more appealing look. Prepping the ingredients like this makes cooking much smoother.
Step 2
The secret to delicious stir-fried fish cakes is the sauce! In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, 1 Tbsp gochujang, and 2 Tbsp maesilcheong for sweetness and flavor. Mix them well to create a tasty seasoning paste. If you don’t have maesilcheong, you can substitute it with sugar.
Step 3
Now, let’s start stir-frying. Heat 2 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the prepared fish cakes, onion, and green onion. Stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes until the vegetables are slightly softened. Stir-frying them first helps maintain their texture and prevents the fish cakes from becoming too mushy.
Step 4
Once the vegetables are halfway cooked, add all the prepared seasoning paste to the pan. Stir-fry together with the other ingredients for about 3-4 minutes, ensuring the sauce coats everything evenly. Be mindful of the heat to prevent the sauce from burning.
Step 5
Finally, when the seasoning is well absorbed by all ingredients, reduce the heat to low and drizzle in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil for extra aroma. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for a nutty finish, and your delicious stir-fried fish cakes are complete! Give it one last quick stir for a beautiful sheen. You can serve it immediately, or let it cool slightly before storing it in a container for later.
