Yongwoodong-Style Bibim Mandu (Spicy Mixed Dumplings)

Hello everyone! I’m recreating the beloved ‘Bibim Mandu’ from Yongwoodong, a restaurant that was popular in my neighborhood about 20 years ago. It was a must-order dish back then, and I still crave its unique flavor! Today, I’m using conveniently purchased flat dumplings to show you an incredibly simple and quick recipe for Bibim Mandu. You can get these flat dumplings for an amazing price – 3 packs for just 5,550 won! Let’s bring back delicious memories with these easy-to-make dumplings.

Main Ingredients

  • 6 Flat dumplings
  • 1 Cabbage leaf
  • A small amount of carrot (for color)
  • 1 packet of seasoned seaweed (gim)
  • Gochujang-based sauce (chojang), to taste

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Traditionally, Bibim Mandu can be made from scratch with homemade dumpling wrappers, or by buying wrappers and filling them with ingredients like stir-fried glass noodles (japchae), green onions, salt, and pepper, then folding them in half to create flat dumplings. However, today, we’ll be using convenient, store-bought flat dumplings that I found at a great price. They arrived mostly thawed, so they’re ready to be cooked right away. Aren’t they uniquely shaped?

Step 1

Step 2

Pan-fry the flat dumplings until they are golden brown and slightly crispy. Listen to that satisfying ‘sizzle’! The dumpling wrappers are quite thick, which makes for a pleasant chewy texture.

Step 2

Step 3

While the dumplings are frying, prepare the plate for your Bibim Mandu. Finely shred the cabbage leaf and the carrot. Arrange the shredded vegetables attractively on the serving plate. The vegetables will add a refreshing crunch.

Step 3

Step 4

Once perfectly cooked, artfully arrange the golden-brown flat dumplings on the plate with the shredded vegetables. Bibim Mandu is best enjoyed immediately while the dumplings are warm.

Step 4

Step 5

Generously drizzle the gochujang-based sauce (chojang) over the shredded cabbage. The sweet and tangy flavor of the chojang is the heart of Bibim Mandu. Feel free to adjust the amount to your preference.

Step 5

Step 6

Finally, sprinkle the thinly sliced seasoned seaweed (gim) over the dumplings and vegetables. This completes your delicious Bibim Mandu! The savory aroma of the seaweed adds another layer of flavor.

Step 6

Step 7

Take a warm, crispy flat dumpling, top it with the seasoned cabbage mixture, and take a big bite! The taste is… well, you know that taste, right? It’s a flavor so good, it would be a shame if it wasn’t delicious! If you miss the taste of Yongwoodong’s Bibim Mandu, or if you’re looking for a simple yet special dish, be sure to try this recipe. It’s a taste that brings pure happiness as you eat it. Here’s a tip: for an even more satisfying meal, try mixing in some boiled bean sprouts or chewy glass noodles (jjolmyeon) with the seasoned vegetables!
