  • 1 can Tuna (approx. 150g, drained)
  • 1/2 Onion (approx. 100g, thinly sliced)
  • A pinch of Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp Sugar

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Let’s make a quick and tasty Tuna and Onion Stir-fry that you can enjoy anytime! Canned tuna is already delicious on its own, but when stir-fried with fresh onions, its flavor becomes richer and more complex. The delightful combination of the crisp onions and tender tuna makes this dish truly special.

Step 1

Step 2

First, prepare the onion. Peel and wash half an onion, then thinly slice it. Heat about 1 teaspoon of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and begin to stir-fry. Cook until the onions become translucent and release their sweet aroma. Stir-frying the onions first enhances their natural sweetness and softens their texture.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the onions are about halfway cooked and turning transparent, it’s time to add the tuna. Open the can of tuna and drain out as much of the oil or water as possible. (Draining the liquid makes the dish lighter and less greasy.) Add the drained tuna to the pan with the sautéed onions and stir-fry them together.

Step 3

Step 4

As you stir-fry the tuna and onions together, add the seasonings to enhance the flavor. Sprinkle a pinch of black pepper for a touch of spice, and add 1 teaspoon of sugar. The sugar will complement the sweetness of the onions and balance the overall taste. The savory tuna, sweet onions, and peppery notes will create a harmonious blend. Continue to stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes until the seasonings are well combined. Your dish is almost ready!

Step 4

Step 5

Tuna is often seasoned already, so you usually don’t need to add extra salt. The combination of its natural flavor with the sugar and pepper is typically sufficient. However, if you find it needs a little more flavor, you can add a tiny bit of soy sauce or salt to adjust. This Tuna and Onion Stir-fry is perfect served over a bowl of hot rice as a simple donburi, or alongside a fresh salad for a lighter meal.
