Essential Ingredients- 1 sheet of nori, cut into 3 strips
- 1 can of Spam
- 1 bowl of rice (approx. 200g)
- 1/2 cucumber
- 2 eggs
Rice Seasoning Ingredients- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1/2 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1/2 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, slice the Spam into approximately 0.8cm thick pieces. The thickness should be suitable for fitting into a nori roll or musubi mold. Uniform thickness will ensure a beautiful appearance after cooking.
Step 2
Heat a pan over medium-low heat and cook the sliced Spam until golden brown on both sides. If too much oil renders, you can gently pat it with a paper towel.
Step 3
Season the warm rice by adding a pinch of salt, 1/2 tablespoon of sesame oil, and 1/2 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds. Mix gently with a spatula or spoon until well combined. The key is to mix without clumping the rice grains.
Step 4
Peel the cucumber into thin ribbons using a vegetable peeler. This creates a beautiful shape and a tender texture. For extra crunch, you can lightly salt the cucumber ribbons and drain any excess water.
Step 5
Crack the two eggs into a bowl and whisk them well. Pour the mixture into a square pan (if you have one, otherwise a regular non-stick pan will work) and cook thinly, creating an egg sheet. Cook over low heat to prevent burning and achieve a beautiful omelet. Once cooked, cut the egg sheet to match the size of the Spam slices.
Step 6
Line the Spam can or a musubi mold with plastic wrap. This will help you easily remove the formed musubi without damaging its shape.
Step 7
Place a layer of the seasoned rice thinly at the bottom of the mold. Then, layer the cooked Spam, thinly sliced cucumber, and the egg sheet in that order. You can add another layer of Spam for extra flavor. Top with a final layer of rice and press down firmly to shape the musubi.
Step 8
Carefully invert the mold and use the plastic wrap to gently lift out the formed musubi. You should have a neatly shaped rectangle.
Step 9
Place the musubi on one of the 3 strips of nori. Wrap the nori around the musubi snugly, ensuring it’s sealed. If the nori is dry, you can lightly moisten the edge with water to help it stick.
Step 10
Slice the nori-wrapped musubi into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm thick. To get clean cuts without tearing the nori, lightly dampen your knife with water or oil. Enjoy your delicious Spam Musubi!
