Tteokbokki Essentials

  • 150g chewy mill tteok (rice cakes for tteokbokki) – you can substitute with ssal tteok if preferred
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs

Flavorful Sauce Mix

  • 1.5 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste) – adjust for spice level
  • 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) – for color and extra kick
  • 1 Tbsp sugar – adjust for sweetness
  • 0.5 Tbsp fish sauce – for umami depth
  • 0.5 Tbsp soy sauce – for added aroma and flavor
  • 1 Tbsp water – to help dissolve the gochujang

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the hard-boiled eggs. Place 2 eggs in a pot and cover with water. Once the water reaches a boil, reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 13 minutes for perfectly hard-boiled eggs.

Step 1

Step 2

While the eggs are boiling, we’ll make the delicious sauce. In a bowl, combine 1.5 Tbsp gochujang, 1 Tbsp gochugaru, 1 Tbsp sugar, 0.5 Tbsp fish sauce, and 0.5 Tbsp soy sauce. Add 1 Tbsp of water to help loosen the gochujang and mix everything thoroughly until smooth. Preparing the sauce in advance saves valuable cooking time.

Step 2

Step 3

Immediately transfer the boiled eggs to a bowl of cold water. This simple trick makes peeling the eggshells significantly easier. Once peeled, set the eggs aside.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, it’s time to cook the tteokbokki! In a pot, add the rinsed 150g of mill tteok, the pre-mixed sauce, and 2 cups (approx. 400ml) of water. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the rice cakes are tender and the sauce begins to bubble, carefully add the hard-boiled eggs. Feel free to toss in chopped green onions, fish cakes, or any other vegetables you enjoy at this stage. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer until the sauce reaches your desired consistency and the tteokbokki has thickened beautifully. Your delicious soupy tteokbokki is ready to be served and enjoyed immediately!
