The slightly bitter, mature flavor of the old gim blends perfectly with a savory seasoning, creating a magical dish that will have you finishing your rice in no time. • Servings : 2 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 10 minutes

Main Ingredients

  • 8 sheets of old gim (seaweed)
  • 1 Tbsp finely chopped green onion

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1/3 Tbsp minced garlic
  • A pinch of toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the seasoning sauce that will be the secret to this delicious gim muchim. In a bowl, combine 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1/2 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, 1/3 Tbsp minced garlic, and a pinch of toasted sesame seeds for that nutty flavor. Mix well until the sugar is dissolved. It’s important to stir until the sugar dissolves. Also, finely chop the green onion to add more flavor.

Step 1

Step 2

Now it’s time to transform the old gim into a delicious side dish. Heat a dry pan over medium-low heat. Place about 8 sheets of old gim without overlapping and toast them until lightly browned and crispy on both sides, flipping them over. Toasting the gim will remove its slightly musty smell and bring out a nutty aroma. Be careful not to burn it by using too high heat.

Step 2

Step 3

Next, we’ll break the well-toasted gim into bite-sized pieces. Place the gim into a plastic bag or a large ziplock bag and gently crumble it with your hands. Using a bag will help contain any crumbs that might fly around, making the process cleaner. It’s better to crumble it slightly coarsely rather than making it too fine, as this will give a better texture.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, let’s get ready to mix everything with the delicious seasoning. In a large bowl, add the crumbled gim and the finely chopped green onion that you prepared earlier.

Step 4

Step 5

Pour all the prepared seasoning sauce over the ingredients in the bowl. It’s important to ensure the seasoning coats the gim evenly.

Step 5

Step 6

Now, gently mix everything together by hand, like you’re kneading dough (‘jobal jobal’). The key is to gently toss the ingredients so the seasoning is evenly distributed on the gim and green onions. Avoid kneading too vigorously, as this can make the gim mushy. Mix gently for about 1-2 minutes until the gim’s flavor melds well with the seasoning.

Step 6

Step 7

And there you have it! Your rice-thief ‘Gim Muchim’ made from old gim from the freezer is complete! Its slightly bitter yet savory flavor will whet your appetite and is perfect for eating with rice. Placed on your dining table, it will be a satisfying side dish that the whole family will love. Enjoy!
