Tender Tofu and Flavorful Pork Belly Simmer

The Ultimate Main Dish: Delicious Braised Pork and Tofu Recipe!

Are there any dishes that combine tofu and meat? I absolutely love both, so I decided to make braised pork and tofu! While the pork might add a touch of richness, this dish is so incredibly delicious that it’s become one of my go-to main side dishes. Main Ingredients
  • 1 block firm tofu
  • 200-300g thinly sliced pork belly (daepae samgyeopsal)
  • 1/2 medium onion
  • 1 handful green onions

Seasoning Ingredients
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp sesame oil (deulgireum)
  • 1 Tbsp fish sauce (myeolchi aekjeot)
  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce (jin ganjang)
  • 1/3 cup water
  • A pinch of toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the seasoning mixture for our braised pork and tofu. In a bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of sugar, 2 tablespoons of gochugaru (Korean chili flakes), and 1 tablespoon of fish sauce.

Step 2

Next, add 3 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of minced garlic, and 1/3 cup of water to the bowl. Stir everything together well until the seasonings are thoroughly combined. Your delicious sauce is now ready!

Step 3

In a pot or deep pan, spread the thinly sliced onions evenly across the bottom. This will add a natural sweetness to the dish. Then, layer the thinly sliced pork belly over the onions, ensuring it’s not too clumped together. Finally, cut 1 block of firm tofu into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3 cm thick) and arrange them on top of the pork.

Step 4

Arrange the handful of green onions attractively over the tofu. Pour the prepared seasoning sauce evenly over all the ingredients. Before adding the sauce, drizzle 2 tablespoons of sesame oil (deulgireum) over everything for added aroma and flavor. Now, cover the pot and bring it to a boil over high heat. Once it starts to boil vigorously, reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer gently until the sauce thickens and becomes slightly reduced.

Step 5

Continue to simmer until the sauce becomes rich and coats the ingredients nicely. Periodically, use a ladle to gently spoon some of the hot simmering sauce over the tofu. This will help the tofu absorb the flavors and become even more delicious. Simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the sauce is reduced to your liking.

Voila! Your delicious braised pork and tofu is ready. It’s amazing how you can create such a satisfying main dish with such simple ingredients and steps. This dish is perfect for special occasions, when hosting guests, or just as a comforting weeknight meal. Enjoy it with a warm bowl of rice!
