- 1 Tbsp mentsuyu (Japanese dipping sauce)
- 1 Tbsp cooking sake (mirin)

- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp chopped green onion
- 1 Tbsp sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Here are the ingredients prepared for the Spam and Egg Rice Bowl. Adding mushrooms or other vegetables would also be delicious!
Step 2
Prepare the whole garlic cloves as they are. Cut the bacon into 2cm strips, dice the Spam into 1.5cm cubes. Thinly slice the carrot and onion.
Step 3
In a bowl, crack 5 eggs. Add 1 Tbsp mentsuyu, 1 Tbsp cooking sake, and a pinch of black pepper. Whisk well until thoroughly combined. If you don’t have mentsuyu, you can substitute it with 2 pinches of salt.
Step 4
Melt 1 Tbsp of butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the whole garlic cloves, bacon, Spam, and carrots. Stir-fry for about 2 minutes to infuse the ingredients with flavor. If your bacon is particularly fatty, you can skip the butter and cook using the bacon’s own rendered fat. The bacon I used was quite lean, so I added butter.
Step 5
Add 1 Tbsp of sugar and stir to combine with the other ingredients.
Step 6
Add the sliced onion and stir-fry for another 2 minutes, until it becomes slightly translucent. Then, add 1 Tbsp of oyster sauce and quickly mix everything together. Stir-frying until all the vegetables are tender will bring out their natural sweetness and make the dish even more flavorful.
Step 7
Pour the whisked egg mixture over the cooked ingredients in the pan.
Step 8
After about 30 seconds, gently begin to stir the eggs with a spatula or chopsticks, starting from the edges and moving towards the center. Avoid stirring too vigorously to maintain a soft texture.
Step 9
When the eggs are about 70% cooked, turn off the heat. Continue to gently stir the eggs in the residual heat of the pan. This will result in a wonderfully soft and fluffy scrambled egg mixture. Be careful not to overcook, as it can become dry.
Step 10
Serve the cooked Spam and egg mixture over a bowl of hot rice. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds to complete your delicious Spam and Egg Rice Bowl! Even picky eaters who dislike vegetables will enjoy this preparation. The pan-fried whole garlic cloves are also a tasty treat, so don’t miss them!
