Tteokbokki Ingredients

  • 30 Tteokbokki rice cakes (approx. 300g)
  • 3 sheets of fish cakes
  • 1 handful of cocktail shrimp (optional)
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs (optional)
  • A little chopped green onion
  • 1/2 onion

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the tteokbokki rice cakes. If they are stuck together, rinse them in cold water to separate them. If they feel too hard, soak them in lukewarm water for about 10-20 minutes to achieve a chewier and softer texture.

Step 1

Step 2

Chop the vegetables and fish cakes to enhance the flavor of your tteokbokki. Slice the onion thinly and chop the green onion. Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. Feel free to add other vegetables like cabbage, perilla leaves, or mushrooms according to your preference.

Step 2

Step 3

If you are using frozen cocktail shrimp, briefly soak them in cold water to thaw. If you are using fresh shrimp, wash them thoroughly.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, get your pot or pan ready for cooking the tteokbokki. Lightly oil the pot and sauté the sliced onion and green onion over low heat to release their aroma. Be careful not to burn the vegetables; sauté for just about 1-2 minutes.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the fragrant vegetables are sautéed, pour in 2 cups (400ml) of water. This will form the base of your delicious tteokbokki broth.

Step 5

Step 6

Let’s make the sauce! Add 1.5 Tbsp gochujang, 2 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic, and 1 Tbsp gochugaru to the water. Stir well with a whisk or spoon to dissolve any clumps of gochujang. Then, add the rice cakes and the cut fish cakes. Stir occasionally as it simmers to allow the flavors to meld. Taste the broth and adjust seasoning by adding more soy sauce if it’s too bland, or more sugar if you prefer it sweeter.

Step 6

Step 7

Once the broth starts to boil, add the thawed cocktail shrimp and cook them together. The shrimp will add more depth to the broth as they cook. Continue to simmer for about 5-7 minutes until all ingredients are well combined.

Step 7

Step 8

Finally, place the halved hard-boiled eggs on top of the tteokbokki. You can add pre-boiled eggs, or let the tteokbokki simmer down like a stew – both ways are delicious! The tteokbokki is ready when the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened. Turn off the heat and sprinkle with sesame seeds for a final touch. Enjoy your delicious soupy tteokbokki!
