Simple ingredients, simple steps, yet a wonderfully satisfying taste. Introducing our super easy Heart-Shaped Gimbap!
Ingredients- 4 sheets Dried Seaweed (Gim)
- 1 can Spam (approx. 120g)
- 1 bowl Warm Cooked Rice (approx. 200g)
- 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
- A pinch of Toasted Sesame Seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare your can of Spam. Open it and remove the contents. Slice the Spam into four equal pieces, approximately 1cm thick. Ensure the slices are uniform in thickness by cutting straight down with your knife.
Step 2
Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat. Place the sliced Spam into the pan and fry until golden brown and slightly crispy on both sides. This process will enhance its savory flavor and texture.
Step 3
Now, we’ll prepare the Spam for the heart shape. Cut each fried Spam slice lengthwise in half. A key tip here is to cut them *diagonally* rather than straight down the middle. This subtle angle will help create the perfect heart shape when assembled.
Step 4
In a bowl, place the warm cooked rice. Add about 1 tablespoon of sesame oil and a pinch of toasted sesame seeds. Gently mix the rice, ensuring the oil and seeds are evenly distributed. Since Spam is already salty, there’s no need to add extra salt.
Step 5
Take one sheet of dried seaweed (gim) and tear it in half lengthwise. On one of the halves, place a prepared Spam piece along the center of the shorter side. Then, add a layer of seasoned rice on top of the Spam. Press down firmly with your fingers or a gimbap rolling tool to secure the Spam and rice together. This forms the core of your gimbap.
Step 6
Prepare the other half of the seaweed sheet. Similar to how you would normally make gimbap, spread a thin, even layer of the seasoned rice across this half-sheet. Avoid making the rice layer too thick, as this can cause the gimbap to burst or lose its shape. Thin and even is best!
Step 7
Carefully place the Spam-filled seaweed roll (from step 4) onto the rice-covered seaweed half (from step 5). Position it so the Spam side faces upwards.
Step 8
Now, roll everything up tightly, just like you would with regular gimbap. Ensure the edges are sealed well to prevent unraveling. Once rolled, slice the gimbap into bite-sized pieces. For cleaner cuts, lightly wet your knife with water between slices to prevent rice from sticking.
Step 9
Even though it only contains Spam, when you slice it, you’ll see adorable heart shapes appearing, making it look incredibly charming. Both children and adults will be delighted by its cute appearance.
Step 10
This gimbap is perfect for packing in a lunchbox for a date or enjoying as a simple snack. It’s easy to make but offers both delicious taste and a delightful presentation, bringing joy to whoever makes and eats it.
