Main Ingredients

  • 1 pack of fish cakes (approx. 300g)
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1/2 stalk of green onion

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 1.5 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp corn syrup (or oligodang)
  • Sesame seeds to garnish

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, rinse the fish cakes briefly under running water to remove excess oil. Then, cut them into bite-sized squares. Thinly slice the onion and diagonally or chop the green onion. Your prep work is now complete!

Step 1

Step 2

Heat 1-2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onions first and sauté until they become translucent. This process helps bring out the natural sweetness of the onions. For an extra flavor boost, you can add a pinch of salt and a dash of pepper at this stage (optional).

Step 2

Step 3

Once the onions are translucent, add the prepared fish cakes to the pan. Stir-fry them together for about 2-3 minutes, or until the fish cakes soften slightly. If you’re using optional ingredients like sausage or imitation crab sticks, add them now and stir-fry along with the fish cakes.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, it’s time to add the key to the delicious flavor: the sauce. Add 1.5 tablespoons of soy sauce and 2 tablespoons of corn syrup. Stir-fry everything together, ensuring the sauce coats all the ingredients evenly. If you prefer less sweetness, start with 1 tablespoon of corn syrup and add more to taste. If you desire a sweeter dish, feel free to add a bit more.

Step 4

Step 5

Finally, add the chopped green onions and stir-fry for another brief moment. Avoid overcooking the green onions to maintain their fresh aroma. Just before turning off the heat, sprinkle generously with sesame seeds for added nutty flavor and visual appeal. For an extra touch of richness, you can drizzle in about half a tablespoon of sesame oil.

Step 5

Step 6

And there you have it – perfectly seasoned soy sauce braised fish cakes! You can customize the taste to your preference. If it’s not sweet enough, add more corn syrup. If it needs more saltiness, add a little more soy sauce. For a spicy kick, stir in 1 tablespoon of chopped Cheongyang peppers or chili powder. Enjoy this versatile and delicious dish!
