Hotteok Dough and Filling Ingredients

  • 700g mashed cooked sweet potato
  • 4-5 cups pancake mix (adjust for dough consistency)
  • 5 Tbsp sugar (for filling)
  • 3 Tbsp walnuts, chopped
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon (for filling)
  • Vegetable oil, for cooking

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, peel the cooked sweet potatoes and mash them thoroughly in a bowl while they are still warm. Using a fork or a potato masher will help achieve a smooth consistency. Mashing while warm makes the process much easier.

Step 1

Step 2

Add 4 cups of pancake mix to the bowl with the mashed sweet potato. Mix with a spatula or your hands until a dough forms that is slightly sticky but manageable, not overly sticking to your hands. If the dough feels too wet, gradually add more pancake mix until you reach the desired consistency. Over-kneading is not necessary.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, let’s prepare the filling. In a small bowl, combine 5 tablespoons of sugar and 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Stir well to ensure the cinnamon is evenly distributed throughout the sugar.

Step 3

Step 4

Place the chopped walnuts in a dry skillet over low heat. Toast them gently, stirring occasionally, until they become fragrant. This step enhances the nutty flavor and aroma of the walnuts.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the toasted walnuts have cooled slightly, finely chop them. Add the finely chopped toasted walnuts to the sugar and cinnamon mixture and stir thoroughly to create a delicious filling for your hotteok.

Step 5

Step 6

It’s time to shape the hotteok. Take a portion of the dough (about the size of a small ball) and flatten it into a circle. Place a generous spoonful of the walnut and cinnamon filling in the center. Carefully bring the edges of the dough together to enclose the filling completely, pinching to seal. Then, gently flatten the stuffed dough ball into a disc shape.

Step 6

Step 7

Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Carefully place the flattened dough discs into the hot oil. Use a spatula to gently press down on the hotteok, flattening it slightly as it cooks. Once the bottom side is golden brown and crisp, flip it over and cook the other side until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust the heat as needed to ensure the inside cooks thoroughly without burning the outside.

Step 7

Step 8

Once perfectly golden brown and cooked, carefully remove the sweet potato hotteok from the skillet and place them on a serving plate. They are best enjoyed immediately while warm.

Step 8

Step 9

Enjoy your delicious Sweet Potato Hotteok, featuring a chewy yet soft exterior and a wonderfully sweet and cinnamon-spiced interior with crunchy walnuts!
