Ingredients
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • 300ml milk
  • 4 Tbsp condensed milk (adjust to taste)
  • 20g unsalted butter
  • Pinch of cinnamon powder (optional)
  • 2 pinches of salt

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, thoroughly wash the sweet potatoes and peel them. Cut the peeled sweet potatoes into manageable pieces and place them in a steamer. Steam for about 20-30 minutes until very tender. You’ll know they’re done when a fork or chopstick pierces them easily. Tip: Steaming sweet potatoes, rather than boiling them in water, brings out a richer, deeper sweetness and a creamier texture.

Step 2

Prepare the other ingredients needed for the jam: measure out the milk, condensed milk, and butter.

Step 3

Place the warm, steamed sweet potatoes into a blender. Pour in the measured 300ml of milk.

Step 4

Secure the lid of the blender and process until the sweet potatoes and milk are completely smooth and creamy. Aim for a lump-free consistency.

Step 5

To the blended sweet potato mixture, add 4 tablespoons of condensed milk, 20g of butter, and 2 pinches of salt. Stir everything together until well combined. (Note: While the broadcast recipe used seasoned salt, regular salt is perfectly fine for home cooking. If you don’t have butter, you can substitute with an additional 2 tablespoons of condensed milk. It’s best to taste and adjust the sweetness to your preference; I found 4 tablespoons of condensed milk to be quite sweet.)

Step 6

Pour the sweet potato mixture into a wide pan and heat over low heat. Using a spatula, continuously stir the mixture, scraping the bottom, to evaporate moisture and cook it down to a jam-like consistency. Let it simmer gently.

Step 7

It’s crucial to stir patiently to prevent sticking! Once the jam reaches your desired thickness, remove it from the heat. Stir in a pinch of cinnamon powder if you like, for an aromatic touch. This homemade sweet potato jam is so delicious you’ll want to eat it straight from the spoon!

Step 8

Now, let’s make the sandwiches! I’m using regular bread slices here. Prepare your bread slices. Then, use a rolling pin to flatten each slice of bread. This step is key for creating clean, perfect half-moon shapes when you use a glass to cut them later. Rolling them evenly is the trick.

Step 9

On one flattened bread slice, spoon about 1 generous tablespoon of the sweet potato jam and place it in the center.

Step 10

Place another flattened bread slice on top to form a sandwich.

Step 11

Now for the half-moon shape! Take a clean drinking glass and press it firmly onto the sandwich to cut out a half-moon shape. Because the bread was rolled thin, it should cut cleanly and easily. You’ll end up with adorable, rounded half-moon sandwiches.

Step 12

Voila! These charming half-moon sandwiches are ready. They say children eat with their eyes first, and a pretty presentation can magically capture a child’s attention, even for simple sandwiches. Make a special shape with simple ingredients!

Step 13

These half-moon sandwiches, perhaps even called ‘songpyeon’ sandwiches due to their shape, reveal a generous filling of sweet potato jam when cut in half. Aren’t they mouthwatering? The combination of sweetness and creaminess melts in your mouth, creating an incredibly soft and delicious experience that kids will absolutely adore.

Step 14

Furthermore, the subtle, sophisticated aroma of cinnamon powder adds another layer of flavor, uplifting your mood. This delightful sweet potato jam is wonderful on its own, but also pairs surprisingly well with vegetables! Its sweetness can even make less-popular veggies more appealing. They are also a perfect, gentle snack for elderly family members.

Step 15

This half-moon sweet potato jam sandwich recipe is so simple that anyone can make it! It’s also a fantastic activity to do with children, creating fun memories together.

Step 16

Sweet treats like this are perfectly complemented by a fragrant cup of coffee. Brew a delicious cup of coffee and enjoy a leisurely weekend brunch with these simple yet elegantly sweet sandwiches. They’ll bring a cheerful, bubbly mood to your entire day!

Step 17

Despite the incredibly simple ingredients and method, the taste is far from ordinary. It boasts a sophisticated and deep sweetness reminiscent of gourmet desserts. They make for an uncomplicated yet refined brunch or a delightful dessert.
