Seed Hotteok- 1 packet store-bought Hotteok mix
- 1 and 1/3 cups warm water (approx. 240ml)
- 1 cup chopped nuts (peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, etc.)
Ice Cream Hotteok- 2 Tbsp scooped ice cream (vanilla or your favorite flavor)
- A little condensed milk or chocolate syrup (optional)
- 2 Tbsp scooped ice cream (vanilla or your favorite flavor)
- A little condensed milk or chocolate syrup (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Pour 1 and 1/3 cups of warm water into a bowl. The water should feel comfortably warm to the touch.
Step 2
Add the dry yeast included in the Hotteok mix to the water and dissolve it well. Stir until the yeast is completely dissolved.
Step 3
Add the flour from the Hotteok mix
Step 4
Mix gently with a spatula or your hands until no dry flour is visible. Avoid overmixing; it doesn’t need to be kneaded extensively at this stage.
Step 5
Knead the dough lightly with your hands until it forms a cohesive ball. For a chewier texture, knead gently for about 5 minutes. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.
Step 6
Lightly sprinkle some flour on your work surface or a large tray to prevent the dough from sticking.
Step 7
Lightly coat your hands with cooking oil. This will make it much easier to handle the dough and prevent it from sticking to your hands.
Step 8
Divide the dough into 2-3 portions and shape each portion into a flat, round disc. Make sure not to make them too thin, or the filling might leak out during cooking.
Step 9
Generously spoon the sugar filling from the Hotteok mix (or your prepared nut filling) into the center of each dough disc.
Step 10
Carefully gather the edges of the dough to enclose the filling completely, ensuring there are no gaps. Pinching the seams tightly will prevent the filling from leaking out while cooking.
Step 11
Behold! Your hotteoks are ready for frying.
Step 12
Heat about half a cup of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Once the oil is shimmering, carefully place the shaped hotteoks into the pan, seam-side down.
Step 13
Place the hotteoks with the sealed side facing down. This helps them cook evenly and keeps the filling contained.
Step 14
Once the bottom side is golden brown and crisp, carefully flip the hotteoks over. It’s important to maintain medium-low heat to prevent burning.
Step 15
After flipping, gently press down on the hotteoks with a spatula or ladle to flatten them. This ensures the filling cooks through and results in a crispier texture.
Step 16
Continue to cook until both sides are golden brown and crispy. Your delicious hotteoks are now ready!
Step 17
For the Seed Hotteok, use scissors to cut a slit in the middle of the cooked hotteok, or cut about halfway through the top to create space for the filling.
Step 18
Generously stuff the chopped nuts into the opening you created. Your delicious Seed Hotteok is ready! Serve immediately while warm for the best flavor and texture.
Step 19
To make the Ice Cream Hotteok, drizzle condensed milk or chocolate syrup over the cooked hotteok, according to your preference, to add extra sweetness.
Step 20
Top with a generous scoop of cold, creamy ice cream. Your refreshing and sweet Ice Cream Hotteok is complete! The contrast between the warm, chewy hotteok and the cold, melting ice cream is simply divine.
