Have too many apples from the holiday season? Turn them into delightful, healthy snacks for kids with this recipe for Apple French Pies, using sweet, fragrant apples and soft bread. It’s a wonderful way to make good use of your leftover apples!
Main Ingredients
- 1 medium apple
- 4 slices of bread
Apple Filling Seasoning
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp honey
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp honey
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash and peel the apple, then remove the core and dice it into small pieces. Place these finely chopped apples in a small saucepan. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 tablespoon of honey. Set the heat to the lowest setting. It’s crucial not to stir at this stage; let the apples cook down in their own juices.
Step 2
While the apples are cooking, trim the crusts off the 4 slices of bread. Then, use a rolling pin to flatten each slice of bread thinly and evenly. This will make them easier to roll later.
Step 3
On only one half of each flattened bread slice, make diagonal score marks with the tip of a knife or a chopstick. These scores will create a beautiful pattern when you fold the pie later.
Step 4
By now, the apples in the saucepan should have released their natural moisture and be simmering with the sugar and honey, creating a sweet filling. Continue to cook for about 5 more minutes over low heat until the apple filling is done and slightly thickened. It’s nice to leave it a little moist rather than too dry.
Step 5
Place a generous spoonful of the warm, cooked apple filling onto the prepared bread slices. It’s best to place the filling slightly away from the edges to prevent it from leaking out when folded.
Step 6
Lightly dampen the edges of the bread with your fingertip; this will help the bread stick together. First, fold over the scored side to enclose the filling, then fold the rest of the bread over to form the pie shape. Use a fork to press down firmly along the edges, sealing them and creating a decorative pattern, much like a traditional pie crust.
Step 7
The Apple French Pies are now ready for baking. Preheat your air fryer to 200°C (400°F). Place the pies inside and bake for about 5 minutes, aiming for a crispy exterior and a warm, gooey center.
Step 8
After 5 minutes, check the pies. They should be golden brown and look appetizing. Once they’ve reached a beautiful golden hue, they are ready to be served! Enjoy your delicious Apple French Pies while they are warm, offering a delightful contrast between the crispy crust and the soft, sweet apple filling.
