Ingredients- 1kg Chinese Chestnuts (use plump, sweet varieties)
- 1 Tbsp Salt (enhances flavor)
- 150-200ml Water (for steaming)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the main ingredient for roasted chestnuts: Chinese chestnuts. Rinse the chestnuts several times under cold water to thoroughly remove any dirt or impurities. Once washed, drain them and get them ready for use.
Step 2
Prepare a frying pan with some depth. Pour 150 to 200ml of water into the pan and bring it to a boil over high heat. Since we’ll be steaming the chestnuts using the moisture, adjust the water quantity based on your pan size, but ensure there’s enough.
Step 3
Once the water is boiling vigorously, carefully add the washed Chinese chestnuts to the pan. It’s best to leave some space between the chestnuts so they aren’t overcrowded.
Step 4
Immediately after adding the chestnuts, cover the frying pan tightly with a lid. This will prevent the steam from escaping and effectively steam the chestnuts evenly.
Step 5
Reduce the heat to medium-low, keeping the lid on, and let the chestnuts cook. This step is crucial for ensuring the chestnuts steam through without drying out, keeping them moist inside. Cook for about 10 minutes without opening the lid.
Step 6
After about 10 minutes, check if most of the water inside the pan has evaporated. Once the moisture is gone and the chestnuts are partially cooked, remove the lid. Stir the chestnuts gently with a spatula as if stir-frying them. It’s important to mix them evenly so they don’t stick together.
Step 7
Continue to cook them, stirring as if stir-frying. When the moisture has completely dried up and the slits on the chestnuts begin to open slightly, it’s the perfect time for delicious roasted chestnuts. At this point, spread the chestnuts in a single layer on the pan, ensuring they don’t overlap. This prevents them from burning and ensures even roasting.
Step 8
After spreading the chestnuts evenly, cover the pan again with the lid and continue to cook over low heat. Covering the pan allows the chestnuts to slowly cook through using their own heat and trapped moisture. This process helps to enhance the natural sweetness of the chestnuts.
Step 9
This is the final step. Repeat the process of covering and cooking over low heat a few times. In between, open the lid to stir the chestnuts evenly, then close the lid again and continue cooking. When the chestnuts are uniformly golden brown and the sweet aroma of chestnuts wafts from the slits, your delicious roasted chestnuts are ready! Enjoy them immediately while they are warm for the best flavor.
