Main Ingredients
  • 1 handful dried seaweed (approx. 10-15g)
  • 1 can tuna (150g)

Seasoning & Other Ingredients
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce for soup (Guk-ganjang)
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp salt (for seasoning adjustment)
  • 1 Tbsp ‘Yeon-du’ (or fish sauce)
  • 2 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 4-5 cups water (800ml-1000ml)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, soak the dried seaweed in cold water for about 15-20 minutes until fully rehydrated. Rinse the rehydrated seaweed 2-3 times under clean water to remove any debris, then squeeze out excess water and cut into bite-sized pieces (about 3-4 cm). Place the prepared seaweed and 2 tablespoons of sesame oil in a pot and stir-fry over medium-low heat for 2-3 minutes. Stir-frying the seaweed removes its fishy odor and deepens the soup’s flavor.

Step 2

Drain the liquid from the can of tuna and set aside. If you prefer a richer broth, you can use some of the canned oil, but draining it will result in a lighter, more delicate flavor.

Step 3

Pour the water (4-5 cups) into the pot with the stir-fried seaweed and bring to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low, add 1 tablespoon of soy sauce for soup, 1 tablespoon of salt (adjust to taste), and 1 tablespoon of ‘Yeon-du’ (or fish sauce) to season. Finally, add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic and let it simmer until the soup comes to a boil again.

Step 4

Once the soup is boiling well, add the drained tuna. Avoid boiling for too long after adding the tuna to prevent the flakes from breaking apart and to maintain their shape. Simmer for only about 1-2 more minutes after adding the tuna.

Step 5

Be careful not to stir too vigorously with a ladle after adding the tuna. Gently mix or lightly press down with a spoon while simmering to keep the tender tuna pieces intact. Cook for just 1-2 more minutes to allow the savory tuna flavor to meld into the broth.

Step 6

Your delicious tuna seaweed soup is ready! Enjoy it with a warm bowl of rice for a satisfying and tasty meal. For an extra touch, you can garnish with chopped green onions or red chili peppers.
