Main Ingredients- 300g firm tofu for frying
- Plenty of potato starch
- 2 slices of processed cheese
Seasoning Ingredients- 1/2 – 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 1/2 – 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
It’s crucial to thoroughly drain the tofu before cooking. Use paper towels to press out as much water as possible. Then, cut the tofu into approximately 1cm thick slices, and further cut each slice into 4 equal pieces to create bite-sized portions (about 4x4cm).
Step 2
Place a slice of cheese on top of each prepared tofu piece. If the cheese slices are larger than the tofu, trim them to fit. Then, cover with another piece of tofu to sandwich the cheese.
Step 3
Prepare a generous amount of potato starch. Dredge the sandwiched tofu pieces thoroughly in the potato starch, coating both sides evenly. Ample starch coating is key to achieving a crispy and delicious texture when fried.
Step 4
If you have time, place the starch-coated tofu sandwiches in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes. This resting period helps the starch adhere better to the tofu, preventing it from falling off during cooking. (Optional)
Step 5
Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the starch-coated tofu cheese sandwiches into the pan. It’s best to cook them over medium heat – not too high – allowing them to cook thoroughly yet quickly.
Step 6
Fry the tofu until each side is golden brown. Be careful not to let the cheese ooze out. Use a spatula to gently flip the sandwiches and ensure they are evenly browned on all sides. Achieving a nice crisp on the exterior is the goal.
Step 7
Once both sides of the tofu are golden brown, carefully push the tofu to one side of the pan. Add the soy sauce, sugar, and oyster sauce to the empty space and let them simmer briefly to create the sauce. Once the sauce starts to bubble, toss the tofu in the sauce and cook for another 1-2 minutes, flipping them to coat evenly. This allows the sauce to penetrate the tofu.
Step 8
Your delicious Tofu Cheese Sandwiches are ready! Serve them warm to enjoy the fantastic texture of crispy tofu and perfectly melted, stretchy cheese. They are excellent as a side dish with rice or as a delightful snack for kids!
