- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 3 Tbsp Tonkatsu Sauce (or Steak Sauce)
- 2 Tbsp Ketchup
- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1/2 Tbsp Sugar
- Pinch of Black Pepper (to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, dice the Spam, brown button mushrooms, and onion into roughly 1.5cm cubes. Cutting all ingredients to a similar size ensures they cook evenly and are easy to eat.
Step 2
Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and stir-fry until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. The key is to gently cook the garlic in the oil until its aroma is fully infused. Avoid high heat, as the garlic can burn quickly.
Step 3
Once the garlic is fragrant, add the diced onion and Spam to the pan and stir-fry them together. Cook just until the onions become slightly translucent to maintain a pleasant texture.
Step 4
Next, add the diced brown button mushrooms and continue to stir-fry until all the ingredients are nicely browned. You’re aiming for onions that are halfway translucent and Spam that has a light golden-brown exterior.
Step 5
When all the ingredients are well stir-fried, it’s time for the delicious sauce! Add 2 tablespoons of ketchup, 1/2 tablespoon of sugar, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, and 3 tablespoons of tonkatsu sauce. Mix everything together and stir-fry until the sauce coats the ingredients evenly. (Tip: You can substitute tonkatsu sauce with store-bought steak sauce. However, if using a sauce with strong acidity like A1 sauce, adjust the amount of ketchup and sugar to your preference.)
Step 6
Once the sauce has coated the ingredients and they look glossy, turn off the heat. Finally, generously grind fresh black pepper over the dish according to your taste. This step adds a wonderful aroma and flavor. Your Spam Chop Steak is ready!
