This is a recipe for tteokkochi (skewered rice cakes) that’s perfect for making when you have a late-night craving. Use your rice cooker to get chewy, perfectly baked rice cakes, then coat them in a delicious sauce for a delightful snack.
Main Ingredients
- 150g Soft Rice Cakes (tteokbokki tteok, tteokguk tteok, etc.)
- 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil or Cooking Oil
Tteokkochi Sauce
- 1/2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1/2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 2 Tbsp Ketchup
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- A pinch of Sesame Seeds
- 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder (or 1/2 tsp minced garlic)
- 1/2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1/2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 2 Tbsp Ketchup
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- A pinch of Sesame Seeds
- 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder (or 1/2 tsp minced garlic)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Grease the bottom of the rice cooker inner pot with 1 Tbsp of sesame oil or cooking oil. This prevents the rice cakes from sticking and adds a nice toasty flavor.
Step 2
Spread the 150g of thawed rice cakes evenly in the greased inner pot, making sure they don’t overlap too much. You can use tteokbokki tteok or tteokguk tteok. (If using frozen rice cakes, briefly blanch them in boiling water, drain, and then use for a softer texture when baked.) Select the ‘reheat’ or ‘steam’ function on your rice cooker and cook for about 9 minutes to lightly bake the rice cakes. This will give them a delightfully chewy texture.
Step 3
While the rice cakes are baking, combine all the sauce ingredients in an airtight container or small bowl and mix well. Add 1/2 Tbsp gochujang, 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp ketchup, 1 Tbsp sugar, and 1/2 tsp garlic powder (or minced garlic). Stir until smooth to create your delicious tteokkochi sauce.
Step 4
Carefully remove the baked rice cakes from the rice cooker and place them into the sauce. Gently toss to coat the rice cakes evenly with the sauce. It’s important to mix them gently so the sauce adheres well without breaking the cakes.
Step 5
Transfer the finished tteokkochi to a serving plate. Sprinkle with sesame seeds to your liking for a final touch. Enjoy this simple yet incredibly tasty snack!
