Tteokbokki Ingredients

  • 150g tteokbokki rice cakes
  • 1 onion
  • 1/4 head of cabbage
  • 150g fish cakes
  • A little green onion

In a wide, deep pan or pot, slice half an onion thinly and spread it across the bottom. This helps to release the onion’s natural sweetness, enhancing the tteokbokki’s flavor.

Next, roughly chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces and arrange them over the onions. The cabbage will add a delightful crunch and sweetness.

Cut the fish cakes into your desired shapes (squares are common) and layer them on top of the vegetables. Fish cakes contribute a savory depth to the dish.

Now, add 150g of tteokbokki rice cakes evenly over the other ingredients. If your rice cakes are a bit stiff, soaking them in warm water for a few minutes beforehand will make them softer and chewier.

Finally, thinly slice the green onion diagonally and sprinkle it over everything. The fresh aroma of the green onions will cut through the richness and add a refreshing note.

Now for the star: the sauce! In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons each of gochujang, soy sauce, sugar, corn syrup, and gochugaru. Remember the ratio: 1:1:1:1:1! Mix these well with 1 tablespoon of minced garlic.

Pour the prepared sauce mixture over the ingredients in the pan. Add 200ml (about 1 cup) of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium and simmer. Stir occasionally until the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened beautifully. Enjoy your delicious homemade instant tteokbokki!
