  • Cooking Time : Within 15 minutes
  • Difficulty : Beginner

Main Ingredients

  • 250g Milltteokbokki tteok (rice cakes)
  • 2 sheets of square fish cakes (eomuk)
  • 50g Cabbage
  • 1 stalk of Green onion
  • 4 Hard-boiled eggs

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes under cold water to remove any excess starch. This prevents them from sticking together and makes the sauce smoother. Let them soak briefly in cold water.

Step 1

Step 2

Wash and chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces. Cut the green onion into manageable lengths. Slice the square fish cakes into your preferred shapes, such as triangles or strips. Adding various vegetables enhances the texture and flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

In a wide pot, add 500ml of water and the coin-shaped broth cube to create a flavorful base. If you don’t have a broth cube, you can use anchovy-kelp broth.

Step 3

Step 4

Add the soaked rice cakes, 1 Tbsp of sugar, and 1/2 Tbsp of minced garlic to the pot. Turn the heat to high and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally to ensure the rice cakes don’t stick.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the water is boiling vigorously, add 1 Tbsp of gochujang, 2 Tbsp of fine gochugaru, 1/2 Tbsp of curry powder, 1 Tbsp of allulose (you can substitute with corn syrup or oligosaccharide for sweetness), 2 Tbsp of soy sauce, and a pinch of MSG (if using). Stir well to dissolve the seasonings into the broth.

Step 5

Step 6

Now, add the prepared cabbage, fish cakes, green onion, and the hard-boiled eggs to the pot. Reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 5-7 minutes, or until the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency. The vegetables should be cooked but still have a slight bite.

Step 6

Step 7

And there you have it! Your incredibly simple and delicious tteokbokki is ready. Enjoy the chewy rice cakes, savory fish cakes, and the perfect balance of spicy and sweet sauce. This is a fantastic snack or light meal. Don’t forget to mix some rice into the leftover sauce – it’s delicious!
