  • Ingredient Category : Rice
  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Stir-fry
  • Servings : 4 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 15 minutes
  • Difficulty : Beginner

Basic Ingredients

  • 300g Tteokbokki rice cakes (use soft rice cakes or chewy rice cakes)
  • 2 sheets of fish cakes (eomuk)
  • 1/2 stalk of green onion
  • 1/4 onion
  • 1 red chili pepper (optional, adds color and a touch of heat)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare all the ingredients for your delicious Tteokbokki. Rinse the rice cakes in water and set them aside to prevent sticking. Slice the fish cakes and vegetables into bite-sized pieces (about 2cm wide). Thinly slice the red chili pepper after removing the seeds.

Step 1

Step 2

Cut the fish cakes into pieces similar in size to the Tteokbokki rice cakes, or into bite-sized portions. The shape doesn’t strictly matter, but cutting them to match the rice cakes creates a harmonious bite.

Step 2

Step 3

This step shows the prepared Tteokbokki rice cakes and sliced fish cakes.

Step 3

Step 4

Slice the onion thinly and diagonally slice the green onion and red chili pepper. Pre-cutting your vegetables like this will make the cooking process much smoother.

Step 4

Step 5

Add the Tteokbokki rice cakes and 300ml of water (about 1.5 standard paper cups) to a pot. Bring to a boil over high heat. It’s important to boil until the rice cakes become soft and pliable.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the rice cakes start to soften, add 1/2 Tbsp of minced garlic. The pungent aroma of garlic will deepen the flavor of your Tteokbokki.

Step 6

Step 7

Add 2 Tbsp of gochujang to create the base for the Tteokbokki sauce. Gochujang is the key ingredient responsible for the spicy and savory notes.

Step 7

Step 8

Add 1.5 Tbsp of gochugaru for an extra kick of spiciness. If you’re making this for children or prefer milder flavors, feel free to reduce or omit the gochugaru.

Step 8

Step 9

Finally, add 1.5 Tbsp of sugar for sweetness, 1 tsp of sesame oil for a nutty aroma, and a pinch of sesame seeds. (Don’t forget to add 2 Tbsp of soy sauce and a pinch of black pepper here as well!)

Step 9

Step 10

Now, let the sauce simmer with the rice cakes for a moment. Then, add all the sliced onion, green onion, red chili pepper, and fish cakes. Continue to boil for another 2-3 minutes. The key is to let the delicious flavors from the vegetables and fish cakes meld into the rice cakes.

Step 10

Step 11

Your delicious Tteokbokki is simmering beautifully! Cook until the sauce has nicely coated the rice cakes and the sauce has thickened slightly. The spicy and sweet aroma is already making your mouth water!

Step 11

Step 12

Voila! Your incredibly simple and delicious Tteokbokki is ready. Serve it hot to enjoy the fantastic combination of chewy rice cakes and the spicy-sweet sauce. Enjoy your meal!
