- A pinch of sesame seeds (for garnish)
- 2 servings of warm cooked rice
Sauce Ingredients
- 4 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp mirin (or cooking sake)
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, optional for a spicy kick)
- 6 Tbsp water
- 4 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp mirin (or cooking sake)
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, optional for a spicy kick)
- 6 Tbsp water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
The star of Spam Donburi is, of course, Spam! First, thinly slice the Spam. If you find Spam too salty, you can parboil it in boiling water for 30 seconds to 1 minute to reduce the saltiness and make it more tender.
Step 2
Now, let’s make the delicious sauce. In a bowl, combine 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp mirin, 2 Tbsp sugar, 2 Tbsp gochugaru (add if you like it spicy), and 6 Tbsp water. Whisk everything together with a whisk or spoon until well combined.
Step 3
Lightly oil a preheated frying pan. This will help the Spam cook without sticking and ensure the sauce doesn’t burn.
Step 4
Place the sliced Spam into the frying pan and cook until golden brown on both sides. It’s best to cook over medium-low heat to keep the Spam juicy and achieve a nice crispiness.
Step 5
Honestly, even just eating the Spam like this makes a fantastic side dish for rice. Doesn’t it make your mouth water?
Step 6
Once the Spam is nicely browned, it’s time to add the prepared sauce to the pan.
Step 7
Pour the sauce evenly over the cooked Spam. Stir to coat the Spam well with the sauce.
Step 8
Now, reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer until it thickens and coats the Spam. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. (Tip: Simmering for about 2-3 minutes on low heat is perfect.)
Step 9
It’s important to simmer on low heat, stirring gently, until the sauce has deliciously reduced and coated the Spam, making sure it doesn’t burn. Keep stirring to prevent sticking.
Step 10
Serve the warm rice in a bowl, and generously top it with the beautifully glazed Spam. Your rice thief is ready!
Step 11
For an extra touch, you can sprinkle chopped green onions or scallions over the Spam and add a raw egg yolk to mix in – it’s incredibly delicious! Today, I kept it simple and just added a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Feel free to customize it to your liking!
