Super Easy Microwave Fig Jam
Homemade Fig Jam Made Effortlessly in the Microwave
Making jam traditionally can be quite a task, often requiring constant attention over a hot stove. This recipe offers a delightful shortcut! Learn how to create a small batch of delicious fig jam using just your microwave. It’s perfect for when you crave a homemade treat without the hassle.
Ingredients
- 4 ripe fresh figs
- 5 Tbsp granulated sugar (adjust to taste and fig sweetness)
- 1 pinch salt
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Wash the figs by holding them upright under cool running water, avoiding submerging the stem end. This prevents them from becoming watery and diluting their flavor.
Step 2
Remove the tough stem ends from the washed figs. Chop them into small pieces (about 1-1.5 cm). They will break down further during cooking, so don’t worry about making them too fine.
Step 3
A good ratio for fig jam is typically 2 parts figs to 1 part sugar. For this recipe, we’re using about 5 tablespoons of sugar for the equivalent of 4 figs. Feel free to adjust the sugar based on the natural sweetness of your figs.
Step 4
Add a pinch of salt. This simple addition enhances the sweetness and brings out a richer flavor profile in the jam.
Step 5
Combine the chopped figs, sugar, and salt in a **large, deep microwave-safe bowl**. It’s crucial to use a generously sized bowl as the jam will bubble up. Do NOT cover the bowl.
Step 6
Microwave on high for **7 minutes**. Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your microwave’s power.
Step 7
Carefully remove the bowl from the microwave (it will be hot!) and let it sit for about 10 seconds to cool slightly.
Step 8
Return the bowl to the microwave and cook for an additional **5 minutes**.
Step 9
Jam thickens considerably as it cools. Aim for a consistency that is about 70-80% of your desired final jam thickness. If it’s still too thin, microwave in 30-second increments, checking after each interval. It’s better to stop when it seems slightly runnier than you want, as it will thicken beautifully upon cooling.
Step 10
Once ready, spread your delicious homemade fig jam on toast, scones, or swirl it into your favorite yogurt!
