Super Crispy French Toast
The Perfect French Toast: Crispy Outside, Tender Inside for Everyone
During the school holidays, I wanted to make a French toast that would satisfy both my daughter, who loves French toast, and myself, who adores crispy bread. I made two batches, and they disappeared in no time! This recipe strikes a perfect balance, delivering a delightful crunch on the outside and a wonderfully soft interior.
Basic Ingredients- 2 fresh eggs
- 2 slices of bread
- 1 pinch of salt
- Powdered sugar, to taste
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the egg mixture, which is the heart of French toast. Crack 2 fresh eggs into a bowl. Add a pinch of salt to enhance the flavors. Whisk the eggs gently with a fork or whisk until they are well combined and no streaks of white remain.
Step 2
Once the egg mixture is ready, prepare your bread. Using slightly thicker slices of bread works best for a satisfying texture. Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Add enough butter or cooking oil to generously coat the surface, allowing it to melt and spread. Pour the egg mixture into the hot pan to create an even layer.
Step 3
As soon as the egg mixture is poured into the pan, carefully place the bread slices onto the egg. Let the bread soak up the eggy goodness for a moment, allowing it to absorb some of the mixture.
Step 4
Once the bottom layer of egg on the pan begins to set and cook, carefully flip the bread over. Allow the second side to cook until it’s also golden brown.
Step 5
Reduce the heat to low. Cook for about 2 more minutes, flipping once more if needed, to ensure the bread becomes wonderfully crispy on the outside while remaining soft and moist inside. The goal is a pleasant crunch, not a hard or burnt texture.
Step 6
Carefully transfer the perfectly cooked French toast to a serving plate. Enjoy the warmth and aroma of freshly made toast.
Step 7
I often make my own strawberry jam at home. Storing it in a ketchup-style bottle makes it incredibly convenient to use without mess or fuss. I’ll share the recipe for my homemade jam soon!
Step 8
Now, it’s time to personalize your French toast with your favorite toppings! I’ve dusted mine with powdered sugar and added a dollop of my homemade strawberry jam. A key advantage of this recipe is not adding sugar to the egg mixture, which prevents burning and results in a cleaner cook. My jam was a bit runny, so it created a fun, drippy look, but the crispy texture and sweet flavor were absolutely delightful! Feel free to add maple syrup, honey, fresh cream, or any other toppings you love.
