  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Stir-fry
  • Servings : 4 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 10 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Main Ingredients

  • Salted Seaweed Stems 300g
  • 1/2 Onion (medium)
  • A small piece of Carrot (about 1/4 of a medium carrot)
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced

Seasoning

  • 2 Tbsp Perilla Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Cooking Wine (e.g., Mirin)
  • 1/3 Tbsp Ginger Syrup (or a little ginger juice)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

The first crucial step is to desalinate the salted seaweed stems. Since they are preserved in salt, this process is essential to achieve a palatable flavor.

Step 1

Step 2

Gently brush off any excess salt, then soak the seaweed stems in cold water for about 20 minutes to gradually remove the saltiness. After soaking, rinse them thoroughly under running water, gently rubbing them a couple of times. Once drained, cut them into bite-sized pieces.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, let’s start stir-frying! Heat a pan over medium-low heat and add the perilla oil. Add the thinly sliced onion and minced garlic, and sauté until fragrant and the onion becomes translucent. Once the onion is softened, add the julienned carrot and stir-fry together until the vegetables are tender-crisp.

Step 3

Step 4

Add the prepared seaweed stems to the pan and stir-fry everything together until well combined. Ensure the seaweed stems are cooked through and have absorbed the flavors.

Step 4

Step 5

Finally, add the ginger syrup and cooking wine, and stir-fry for another minute to glaze. Taste the dish; the saltiness can vary depending on the brand of salted seaweed stems. If needed, add a tiny splash of soy sauce or fish sauce to adjust the seasoning. I found that the natural saltiness was sufficient.

Step 5

Step 6

Your delicious Stir-Fried Salted Seaweed Stems, infused with the rich aroma of perilla oil, are now ready! Enjoy this flavorful side dish with a bowl of warm rice.
