  • Cooking : Steamed
  • Servings : 2 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 30 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Main Ingredients

  • 1/2 carrot, thinly julienned
  • 1/2 zucchini, thinly julienned
  • 100g soybean sprouts
  • 2 shiitake mushrooms, sliced thickly
  • 1/2 onion, thinly julienned
  • 1 bowl of warm rice
  • 1 fresh egg
  • 3 tablespoons water for steaming

Spicy and Sweet Gochujang Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 Tbsp plum extract (maesilcheong)
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp cooking wine (mirin or similar)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • A pinch of toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the vegetables for your bibimbap. Wash and trim them thoroughly. Julienne the carrot, zucchini, and onion into thin strips, about 0.5cm thick. This thickness ensures they cook evenly and have a pleasant texture.

Step 1

Step 2

Next, prepare the shiitake mushrooms. Remove the stems and slice them into thick, attractive pieces following their natural shape. The mushrooms will add a wonderful earthy aroma and flavor to your dish.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, let’s make the star of the bibimbap – the sauce! In a small bowl, combine 1 Tbsp of gochujang, 1 Tbsp of sweet plum extract, 1 Tbsp of minced garlic, and 1 Tbsp of cooking wine. Stir well until thoroughly mixed. Finish by drizzling in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil and sprinkling a pinch of toasted sesame seeds for a fragrant and savory gochujang sauce.

Step 3

Step 4

Prepare your steamer. Arrange the julienned carrots, zucchini, onion, sliced shiitake mushrooms, and soybean sprouts evenly in the steamer basket or a heatproof dish. Steaming the vegetables this way keeps them moist and tender without needing to pan-fry.

Step 4

Step 5

To steam the egg perfectly, pour 3 tablespoons of water into a small bowl or a separate steaming container. Carefully crack the fresh egg into the water, ensuring the yolk remains intact. This method helps the egg cook gently.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the water in your steamer is boiling, place the basket with the prepared vegetables inside. Cover and steam over high heat for about 2 minutes, just until the vegetables begin to soften slightly.

Step 6

Step 7

After steaming the vegetables for 2 minutes, carefully add the container with the egg to the steamer. Cover again and continue to steam for another 4 minutes. You can adjust the cooking time slightly depending on your preference for a runny or firm yolk. (Tip: You can also place the egg directly into the steamer basket if preferred.)

Step 7

Step 8

To serve, spoon a generous portion of warm rice into a bowl. Arrange the beautifully steamed colorful vegetables and the cooked egg attractively on top of the rice. Drizzle with the prepared spicy and sweet gochujang sauce and mix everything together. Enjoy your healthy and delicious Steamed Vegetable Bibimbap!
