Steamed Potatoes with a Hint of Sweetness and Saltiness
Make Delicious Steamed Potatoes with Just the Right Amount of Sweetness and Savory Flavor
I received boxes of fresh potatoes from my mother in the countryside. I simply placed them as they were, covered them lightly with newspaper, and stored them in a cool, well-ventilated area. I take out a bowlful every now and then and steam them, and they are so delicious!
Ingredients
- Potatoes: 17-20 medium-sized
- Water (enough to cover the potatoes)
Seasoning
- Sugar: 2 tsp
- Salt (MSG-containing, for Korean flavor): 2 tsp
- New Sugar (optional, for an old-fashioned taste): 2 tsp
- Sugar: 2 tsp
- Salt (MSG-containing, for Korean flavor): 2 tsp
- New Sugar (optional, for an old-fashioned taste): 2 tsp
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, gently brush off any dirt from the potatoes and rinse them lightly under running water. Use a potato peeler to carefully remove the skin. After peeling, rinse the potatoes thoroughly in cold water until they are crisp and clean. Then, place them in a large pot, ready for steaming.
Step 2
Pour water into the pot with the prepared potatoes, just enough to partially cover them. Now, let’s add the magic seasoning to enhance the potatoes’ flavor. Add 2 teaspoons of sugar, 2 teaspoons of ‘mat-so-geum’ (Korean-style salt), and 2 teaspoons of ‘New Sugar’ (optional, for that nostalgic taste) in a 1:1:1 ratio. Stir gently with a spoon to dissolve the sugar and salt in the water.
Step 3
Cover the pot tightly with a lid and start steaming over high heat. Once the water begins to boil vigorously, reduce the heat to medium. As the potatoes start to soften and cook through, lower the heat further to medium-low, being careful to prevent them from burning or sticking. When the water in the pot has significantly reduced, turn the heat down to very low.
Step 4
When the water at the bottom of the pot has almost evaporated, use a chopstick or tongs to gently turn the potatoes over. This allows the seasoned sauce created during the steaming process to evenly coat the potatoes as they finish cooking on low heat. To check for doneness, pierce a potato with a chopstick; if it goes in smoothly, they are ready. Turn off the gas stove. Cover the pot and let them steam for an additional 2-3 minutes to let the flavors meld. Enjoy your delicious steamed potatoes!
Step 5
On this day, I also made steamed potatoes as a side dish while preparing kimchi pancakes. The combination of crispy kimchi pancakes and these sweet and savory steamed potatoes was surprisingly delicious! It’s a perfect pairing for a hearty meal or a satisfying snack, so be sure to try them together!
