Ingredients

  • 5 handfuls fresh mussels (approx. 500g)
  • 14 cherry tomatoes
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 red chili pepper
  • 1 green chili pepper (e.g., Cheongyang chili)
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp white wine

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Begin by preparing your chilies. Wash the red and green chili peppers, remove their stems, and slice them diagonally into thin pieces. To easily remove the seeds, soak the sliced chilies in cold water for a few minutes. This will ensure a cleaner presentation and milder heat if desired.

Step 1

Step 2

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced garlic cloves and sauté gently. Cook until the garlic becomes fragrant and releases its aroma into the oil, being careful not to let it burn. This step builds a crucial flavor base.

Step 2

Step 3

Once the garlic is fragrant, add the thinly sliced onion to the pan. Sauté the onion until it becomes translucent and tender. Cooking the onion well will bring out its natural sweetness, which is essential for the depth of flavor in the sauce.

Step 3

Step 4

Add the cleaned mussels (about 5 handfuls) to the pan. Pour in 1 tablespoon of white wine to help tenderize the mussels and eliminate any potential fishy odors. Immediately cover the pan with a lid and cook over medium heat for about 3-5 minutes, or until all the mussels have opened. The natural juices released by the mussels will form the base of your delicious sauce.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the mussels have all opened, add the prepared sliced red and green chili peppers to the pan. Gently stir everything together to combine the flavors. The chilies will add a pleasant warmth and a touch of spice to the dish.

Step 5

Step 6

Halve the 14 cherry tomatoes and add them to the pan. Continue to cook for just 1-2 more minutes, allowing the tomatoes to soften slightly without breaking down completely. This will release their juices and create a vibrant, fresh tomato sauce. Once the tomatoes are slightly tender, turn off the heat. Your delicious Steamed Mussels in Tomato Sauce is ready to be served immediately. Enjoy!
