  • Gochugaru (Red Pepper Flakes) 0.5 Tbsp
  • Sesame Seeds (ground) 1 Tbsp
  • Water 2 Tbsp
  • Cider (or Sprite/7UP) 1.5 Tbsp (adds sweetness and flavor)
  • Chopped Cheongyang Peppers 2 (for a spicy kick)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the versatile ssamjang. In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp of homemade gochujang, 2 Tbsp of homemade doenjang, 1/2 Tbsp of minced garlic, 1 Tbsp of sugar, and 0.5 Tbsp of gochugaru. (Note: We’ll add the sesame oil, ground sesame seeds, cider, and water later.)

Once the ingredients are mixed, transfer the ssamjang mixture to a saucepan or frying pan. Lightly sauté it over medium-low heat. This step helps to mellow out any raw flavors and develop a richer, more complex taste for the ssamjang.

While stirring the sautéed ssamjang, add 1 Tbsp of ground sesame seeds, 2 Tbsp of water, and 1.5 Tbsp of cider. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined. The cider not only adds a pleasant sweetness but also helps to tenderize the sauce.

Finally, stir in the 2 chopped Cheongyang peppers for a touch of heat. This completes your flavorful and spicy all-purpose ssamjang, perfect for whetting your appetite! Feel free to adjust the amount of chili peppers to your preference.
