  • Category : Noodles & Dumplings
  • Ingredient Category : Rice
  • Occasion : Quick & Easy
  • Cooking : Stir-fry
  • Servings : 3 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 15 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Main Ingredients

  • 1 stalk Green onion
  • 1/4 head Cabbage
  • 300g Tteokbokki rice cakes (chewy cheese tteok, rice cake soup tteok, mill tteok, or sticky rice tteok – your choice!)
  • 100g Mozzarella cheese
  • 2 sheets Fish cakes
  • 1 Sausage
  • 2 Hard-boiled eggs (optional)

Spicy Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 3 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1 Tbsp Minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp Curry powder
  • 0.5 Tbsp Dashida (MSG-based seasoning)
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • Pinch of Black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup or rice syrup)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the vegetables! Chop the cabbage into large pieces and slice the green onion diagonally. Feel free to cut them to your preferred size!

Step 1

Step 2

Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. For rectangular fish cakes, cutting them into 2-3 pieces each works well.

Step 2

Step 3

Soak the tteokbokki rice cakes in cold water for about 10 minutes before you start cooking. This will make them wonderfully chewy and soft. (If you’re using cheese rice cakes, you don’t need to soak them.)

Step 3

Step 4

Now, let’s make the delicious sauce! Combine the gochujang, gochugaru, minced garlic, curry powder, Dashida, sugar, soy sauce, pepper, and oligodang in a bowl. Mix everything thoroughly until there are no lumps. A well-mixed sauce ensures a richer tteokbokki flavor.

Step 4

Step 5

Pour about 500ml of water (a little less than 3 standard paper cups) into a pot and bring it to a boil over high heat. Once the water starts boiling, we’ll move to the next step.

Step 5

Step 6

When the water is boiling vigorously, add the prepared spicy sauce to the pot and stir to dissolve it well. Make sure the sauce and water are nicely combined.

Step 6

Step 7

Add the soaked rice cakes to the pot. I used chewy cheese rice cakes, but any kind of tteok like rice cake soup tteok, mill tteok, or sticky rice tteok will be delicious! Feel free to use whatever you have on hand.

Step 7

Step 8

Add the sliced fish cakes to the pot as well. They become incredibly tasty when they absorb the sauce.

Step 8

Step 9

Now, add the minced garlic. The garlic’s aroma will add another layer of depth to your tteokbokki.

Step 9

Step 10

Finally, add the chopped green onion and cabbage, and let it simmer a little longer. The vegetables will release moisture, making the tteokbokki sauce even more flavorful.

Step 10

Step 11

If you like, add the sausage and simmer until everything is cooked through and the sauce has thickened to your liking. Your spicy and sweet ‘Yeopgi’ Tteokbokki is almost ready!

Step 11

Step 12

Ladle the delicious tteokbokki into a bowl and generously top with mozzarella cheese. For extra gooeyness, you can microwave the cheese for about 40 seconds until slightly melted, then pour it over the tteokbokki. Enjoy the fantastic combination of cheese and spicy tteokbokki! ♥
