Rice Ball Ingredients- 1 small can of tuna (drained)
- 1 Cheongyang chili pepper (finely chopped, seeds removed)
- 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
- 1.5 bowls of warm cooked rice
Seasoning- 1.5 Tbsp sesame oil
- A pinch of salt (for seasoning the rice, approx. 1/3 Tbsp or to taste)
- 1.5 Tbsp sesame oil
- A pinch of salt (for seasoning the rice, approx. 1/3 Tbsp or to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the rice. Place 1.5 bowls of warm cooked rice into a large bowl or container. Add 1.5 tablespoons of sesame oil for a nutty aroma and about 1/3 tablespoon of salt for seasoning the rice. Feel free to adjust the amount of salt and sesame oil based on your preference and the amount of rice. Using a spatula or spoon, gently mix the rice to avoid mashing the grains.
Step 2
Now, let’s make the tuna mayo filling. Drain the tuna thoroughly and place it in a separate bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise. For a spicy kick, finely chop one Cheongyang chili pepper (remove the seeds and stem first) and add it to the bowl. If you prefer less spice, you can reduce the amount of chili or substitute it with bell pepper, especially for children. Mix all the ingredients well with a spoon until combined.
Step 3
It’s time to shape the rice balls! For hygiene, wear disposable gloves on both hands. Take a portion of the seasoned rice, about a handful, and place it on your palm. Flatten it gently into a disc shape. Place your desired amount of the tuna mayo filling in the center of the flattened rice.
Step 4
Carefully bring the edges of the rice up and around the filling, sealing it completely so the filling doesn’t spill out. Gently cup your hands and roll the rice ball to form a smooth, round shape. Be careful not to press too hard, as this can make the rice balls dense.
Step 5
Voila! Your delicious spicy tuna mayo rice balls are ready. For an extra touch of flavor and texture, you can roll the finished rice balls in crumbled roasted seaweed (gim). If you plan to add seaweed, it’s a good idea to omit the salt in the rice initially and adjust the seasoning after adding the seaweed. Enjoy your homemade rice balls as a satisfying meal!
