Main Ingredients

  • 1 can Tuna, drained (approx. 150g)
  • 1/2 Onion (medium-sized)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare 1 can of tuna. You can choose to drain all the oil or leave some in, depending on your preference. If you drain too much oil, it might become dry when stir-frying, so we recommend draining about two-thirds and using the rest.

Step 1

Step 2

Prepare half of a medium-sized onion. If you slice it too thinly, it’s prone to breaking apart during cooking, so slice it into approximately 0.5cm thick strips or chop it roughly. The onion’s sweetness will blend with the tuna to create a richer flavor.

Step 2

Step 3

Add the drained tuna and the sliced onion to a heated pan and stir-fry over medium heat. The key is to cook until the onion becomes translucent and slightly softened.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the onion starts to cook, add a pinch of black pepper, a pinch of sugar, and a pinch of salt. The black pepper helps to eliminate any fishy smell from the tuna and adds aroma. The sugar enhances the sweetness of the onion and balances the overall flavor. Add salt very sparingly, tasting and adjusting as you go. Don’t add too much at the beginning.

Step 4

Step 5

Continue to stir-fry for about 2-3 more minutes, until the onion is fully cooked, sweet, and well combined with the tuna. Be careful not to overcook, as the tuna can become dry. You can adjust the cooking time based on your preference for the onion’s texture; if you like a slight crunch, cook for less time.

Step 5

Step 6

Finally, sprinkle with sesame seeds to garnish. The nutty sesame seeds will further enhance the flavor of the tuna and onion stir-fry. Serve it over hot rice for a meal that will have you finishing your bowl in no time! This tuna and onion stir-fry is also a big hit as a lunchbox side dish. Enjoy!
