Main Ingredients
  • 1 can Whelks (400g)
  • Approx. 2/3 cucumber
  • 1/4 onion
  • 1 white part of green onion
  • 10 perilla leaves
  • 4 Cheongyang chili peppers

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

1. **Prepare the Fresh Vegetables:** First, gently scrape off the rough bumps on the cucumber’s surface with the back of a knife, then wash it clean. Cut the cucumber in half lengthwise, and then slice it diagonally into about 0.5cm thick pieces. Peel the onion and thinly slice it into strips. For the white part of the green onion, cut it in half lengthwise, remove the tough inner core, and then thinly slice it into strips, similar to the onion. Wash the Cheongyang chili peppers, remove the stems, and slice them thinly on an angle. This will add a nice spicy kick.

Step 2

2. **Cut the Whelks:** Drain the liquid from the can of whelks and discard it. Cut the whelks into bite-sized pieces, usually into 2-3 segments. Try not to cut them too small, as this will reduce the chewy texture.

Step 3

3. **Make the Sauce and Mix:** In a large bowl, place the whelks cut in step 2. Add the store-bought gochujang (6T), minced garlic (1/2T), gochugaru (2T), sesame oil (1T), soy sauce (1T), sesame seeds (1T), oligodang (1/2T), and vinegar (1T). Gently mix these seasoning ingredients with the whelks, ensuring everything is evenly coated. Mix well but gently so as not to mash the whelks.

Step 4

4. **Add Vegetables and Final Toss (and serving suggestion):** Add all the prepared vegetables from step 1 (cucumber, onion, green onion, Cheongyang chili peppers) to the whelk mixture in step 3. Gently toss everything together so that the whelks don’t get crushed, and your delicious whelk salad is complete! This is delicious on its own, but for an even more satisfying meal, consider boiling some thin noodles (somen) or ramen noodles to serve alongside. Enjoy your meal!
