Spicy & Sweet Potato Fish Cake Stir-fry

Main Ingredients

  • 500g Potatoes (about 3-4 medium-sized)
  • 150g Fish Cakes (about 2-3 sheets, cut into squares)
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 1 Red Chili Pepper (or 2 for extra heat)
  • 1/2 Green Onion

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 2 Tbsp Anchovy Sauce (or sand lance sauce)
  • 2 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 3 Tbsp Corn Syrup (or oligodang)
  • 0.5 Tbsp Black Pepper (approx. 1/2 tsp)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, peel the potatoes and cut them into approximately 2cm cubes. Soak the cubed potatoes in cold water for 5-10 minutes to remove excess starch. This prevents them from sticking together and results in a cleaner texture when stir-fried. Drain them thoroughly before proceeding.

Cut the fish cakes into similar sized cubes as the potatoes. Dice the onion. Finely mince the red chili pepper (remove seeds if you prefer less heat), and thinly slice or finely chop the green onion to add aroma.

Heat a little oil in a wide pan. Add the cubed fish cakes and potatoes, and stir-fry over medium-low heat. Continue to stir-fry until the potatoes turn slightly golden brown and develop a appetizing color. A touch of sesame oil at this stage can enhance the nutty aroma.

Once the potatoes and fish cakes are nicely browned, add all the pre-mixed seasoning ingredients (soy sauce, gochujang, anchovy sauce, gochugaru, minced garlic, corn syrup, black pepper) to the pan. Stir well to ensure the seasoning coats the potatoes and fish cakes evenly. Then, add the diced onion and stir-fry together until the onion becomes slightly translucent.

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer and thicken until it’s nicely reduced. Stir occasionally to prevent the sauce from burning. Just before turning off the heat, add the sliced green onion and minced red chili pepper, and mix gently. Your delicious Spicy & Sweet Potato Fish Cake Stir-fry is ready! For an extra touch, sprinkle some sesame seeds on top.
